I would like to present my friend with some facts about what his options are for the future.

GPA ~ 3.2
MCAT 31 ( 8P, 11V, 12B)

ECs:

2 years of TA experience.

What are his chances for MD, DO, or Podiatry?

( I have my own opinions, but I would like to know what SDN thinks).

He has been a non serious pre-med for the past 5 years, and I want him to finally start examining his future plans.

Thank you for your responses!

Generally:

Decent chances for DO if he has all the various bits and pieces and good letters.
Chances are quite poor for MD without an exceptional situation.
I know very little about pod but expect a 3.2/31 would be fine.

He has no other ECs besides being a TA as far as I am aware. Will this severly hurt his chances for DO?

How does your friend have any idea he wants to be a physician with 0 clinical hours???

This will severely hurt his chances. If he wants to apply to DO, he should shadow a DO and get a letter of recommendation.

Perhaps not as much as at MD schools, but clinical volunteering, non-clinical volunteering, research, leadership, shadowing, etc. are always valuable.

I assume 3.2 is the cumulative GPA? Any idea where the science GPA falls? Any course retakes that would help for the AACOMAS GPA calculation? What's the state of residence (if you don't mind sharing)?

I don't expect it to be any higher than his cGPA.

I imagine that he is at least a year away from a solid DO shot then? (To work on his ECs).

He is also thinking about retaking his MCAT.

I know he has a 1 or 2 Cs on some prerequisites. He is from California (non- URM).

Ca DO schools have standards. Applicants can, and have, been rejected for having zero clinical experience. Couple that with his low GPA, and I would say your friend shouldn't take his chances, and should find a hospital to volunteer at. BTW, the fact that your friend doesn't have the drive to post in an online forum doesn't bode well for his future in medicine. Maybe he should find a career that will ignite his passion? Just my 0.02

Ok, it seems that he really needs a lot more experience to even consider applying to DO. I also think his MCAT will expire soon so he might need to retake that too.

Chances for MD or DO: ZERO

How does your friend know what he's getting into? That he really wants to be around sick people for the next 30-40 years? That he knows what a doctor's day is like?

Can't speak to DPM chances.

Will his chances decrease as a DO reapplicant next year if he applies to DO this year?

I'm aware his chances are pretty slim as he stands.

your friend will almost certainly get some DO bites with those stats. maybe if he casts a wide enough net he'll get an acceptance

he should really start on some extracurriculars, like today

Why are you bothering with helping him? It doesn't seem like he cares and frankly would you want him as your doctor?

I won't deny that he has been a pretty bad student for the last few years, but I'm hoping he will turn his life around.
He was on top of his game in HS and Freshman year then he started suffering from depression and became unmotivated.

Has he gotten the professional help he needs? Is the depression under control?. If he applies and is refused across the board is he likely to go into a downward spiral ? I know you are trying to be a good friend but it seems there are so many variables here.

Going to need some clinical exposure and a bit if volunteering for serious consideration. Strong chances for DO if they apply broadly and those requirements are meet.

As to podiatry, stats are more than fine. Throw in a love of Quentin Tarantino films and some shadowing a pod as ECs and they're in.
