I am currently on the path to major in Architecture but I am thinking about possibly going into med-school. Has anyone heard of anyone majoring in architecture and going to med-school later on, or will I have to start completely over?

As long as you take the required science courses and ace the MCAT...anything is possible 😀

Actually if you take all the Pre-Req's that Med Schools require then you have a shot. Med Schools dont really care what you major in as long as you have the pre-req's. And if you major in architecture and apply to Med school it might show them a sense of creativity. So if you have a passion for Medicine and you are pretty sure this is what you want to do then go ahead.

I agree with the previous answers. As long as you take the required classes, you will be str8. In fact, your architecture major will make you a little more marketable to medical schools. Alot of them like non-biology applying now; its like a breath of fresh air to them.

Thanks for the info. It's nice to know that I won't have change majors (again) to do what I really want to do. Would I have to have an extremely high GPA and MCAT to make up for my lack of science background though?

Just makes sure that your science GPA is competitive, and strive for the highest MCAT you can make. You dont' have to work harder because of your major.

I remember someone from my school was majoring in architecture and was pre-med as well. Didn't know the person that well, so I don't know where the person ended up, but I can say it's definitely not unheard of. Good luck.

as a fourth year med student i think it's a great idea that you major in architecture during undergrad and take the required science courses and do your best on the MCAT. you will be competitive and you will stand out and not be at a disadvantage. most of us are run of the mill bio, chem, or biochem majors...same old stuff.

plus, say you don't make it into med school...you got a great backup gig as long as you like working as an architect. you could always keep working as a 'tect until you reapply and get in.

lastly, let's say you do med school and come 4th year of school or sometime during residency you find yourself saying "what the $#%& did i get myself into in with this doctor thing?" you got a way out and can return to architecture. don't think you'd ever end up feeling this way? check out this thread:

definately move to medicine. my husband is an architect. they work crappy hours for crappy pay. unless you have a PASSION for it, forget about it. it's like medicine but with really bad pay. Take your science pre-reqs and you're golden. 👍

You'll be fine, but man, why the hell would you put yourself through an architecture program if you don't want to be an architect? At any decent school, the architecture students work much, much, MUCH harder than anyone else. Have you entered your third year yet?

I chose architecture because I thought that that is what I wanted to do. But, I got a job with an architecture firm and started doing the day to day things that architects do and I just don't have the passion for it to keep at it. Design in architecture is like five percent of the actual stuff you do. Its mostly paper work to cover your butt from having people sue you because they slipped on the handicap ramp you designed. In short, I don't love it enough to compensate for the crappy hours and pay.

Dude, if you're looking for a job that is not mostly "paper work to cover your butt from having people sue you," I would seriously suggest that you rethink going into medicine.... 🙄

On another note, I have always been fascinated by surgery and working with my hands. I mean, I watch videos of surgery for fun in my spare time because I find it so interesting(I know it's weird, but....). The only reason I never considered med-school is because I didn't know enough about it. I always thought that it would be impossible to get in, but through a little bit of research and talking to people, it looks like I have a good chance to go in that direction.

I actually majored in architecture for two years before changing to biochem. Ended up taking me five years to graduate, but I feel the work ethic I learned doing arc has helped tremendously during med school so far (2nd year). Ace the prereqs and take A&P to prep for the MCAT. I'd suggest biochem and an advanced physiology course as well, maybe spring prior to matriculation so it'll be fresh on your mind for M1 year.

Hi,

I’m an architect who is 28, and decided to go to medical school. I know your post is like 12 years old! But I’m so interested to know what did you do and how possible you think this would be to me. Hope you’ve been doing great !!
