Currently, I am a categorical surgery residency, PGY-1. I've completed my ERAS application in hopes of transferring into a radiology residency program. Should I be doing anything else in the interim?

Will I be eligible to start the 2010-2011 academic year in radiology or am I only applying for the 2011-2012? If the latter is most likely, will having a year off in between residencies be looked at as an overwhelming negative?

Brief Stats:
PGY-1 categorical surgery resident in Good Standing
Research Experience
254/99 Step 1
263/99 Step 2
Scheduled for Step 3

Still no interviews... but, no rejections. Someone tell me the floodgates are yet to be opened.

ok..i am helping out with my committee so i ll let you know what are concerns are with ur application.

You are obviously a smart person BUT you are obviously seiing radiology as greener on the other side. it may or may not be. it depends whether you have a true interest in the specialty. we have very smart residents at my program but some are not motivated because they hate radiology. Radiology is tougher mentally than surgery. in fact ask any radiolgy residnt that has done a radiology call compared to a surgery call. it is not even close. dont enter radiology because you think it is easy. there is a reason radiolgy reideny is 4 years and majority of residents choose to do a fellowship.

From a marketing point of view you have to talk up your interest in IR. Just keep in mind also that your biggest obstacle will be the physics exam.

Do research or work in a doc in a box for a year. it wont hurt you for the future.

Give the person credit for seeing the light early in his career that surgery sucks. It could be worse; he could have completed a whole surgical residency before finally having his epiphany.

if he doesnt truly like radiology then radiology will suck too. radiology is not for people on the fence. You will hate it if u are ambivalent to the specialty.
