So I'm slogging through the pile and I keep finding nontrads with not only no SLORs but no letters from EPs at all.

Wasn't anybody listening?

BAH.

funny, thats like trying to use EPs letters to get a job at walmart haha.

Your kidding, right? I mean, I am the prototypical nontraditional and I had 2EP and CCU and really wondered and contemplated about my Psych letter but went ahead and put it in.

Wierd.

ya know, i thought that was mandatory as well, HOWEVER, i had a girl in my med school class who did ZERO/0/nada/zil/zippo EM rotations and got ZERO LOR's from EP's, applied to 5 programs, ranked two and matched #1. surprised the hell out of everyone at our school. Our front office was pissed b/c she has a history of doing the bare minimum on all rotations. We all thought that this would be the time that she would get slapped in the face...how wrong we were. When does the whole, "everything comes full circle" statement ever come into play?

As one can see by reading this forum, there are many MORE THAT QUALIFIED applicants who could "go anywhere" who take this application process seriously. They apply broadly, interview all over, rank everything to match at #1. She really disrespected a lot of our efforts by being so cavalier about the whole process. Whatever, her lack of respect for process and poor work ethic will not last long in EM.

Any idea what program she is at now? I DON'T want to apply there!

I know exactly where she is and I would agree, you don't want to be there...
Can't post it here for obvious reasons

I bet you're wrong...it's NOT west of the Mississippi

So what you're saying is that it's *east* of the mississippi!

This is a topic close to my heart because I'm a non-trad and I know that my ED LOR's aren't in yet. So I give you two very likely explanations for the above:

1. Perhaps the letter writers just haven't sent them in yet...😳
2. and/or maybe their ED rotations are just late in the season...

I realize this will decrease the number of interviews offered but sometimes there's only so much you can do to get a ED letter or a SLOR in, no matter how BADLY you want to go into ED and interview at a certain place.

I hope this is true for the majority, but some of these folks have all 4 letters in and none from an EP.

Well, there is something to be said for planning. Granted, you can do your rotation late or get screwed, but you at least have a chance to plan it in July/August. And some faculty really screw people on SLORs but if you're shifty, you'll ask for a few at each site so you don't get left with zero if someone falls through.

I would speak with the SLOR writer again, in PERSON. People take requests differently in person than over the phone, on email. This is a lesson some residents don't get in the ED either, when I want something, I ASK someone (hey, Bob, can you go do this EKG) instead of paging overhead for a tech... it gets done faster.

Also, ask other people at your site in case this person falls through. I know that if a rotator from our program came to me with this problem, I would pull their file and write their SLOR that day... I'm a nice guy. Of course, I'm no BKN so mine wouldn't carry as much weight, but . . . better than no SLOR.

PS: It's EM, not ED. Some people, especially the oldies get touchy about this. You go into EMERGENCY MEDICINE as a career, you go into ED when you have the clap.

at least he's calling it a department & not a room

BKN:

I know that at my school I was not able to start my first EM rotation until the beginning of September. Didn't leave me too much time to get SLORs. Maybe these folks had the same difficulty.

Wookie,

It's November, some of these folks have all four letters in. I'm not saying they're shut out, but they certainly could have planned better.

Not disputing that planning could help, but at my school, we are not allowed to do any EM during third year. Then, many places don't like to have visiting students in July (for whatever reason). Plus, not having an EM residency, means I can't do it at my school during July.

Now, I still got 3 EM SLORs, but it took me galavanting around the country to get them, as well as spending 3 months away from home, all in a row. In retrospect I probably could have only done 2 away rotations, but I can't change that now. Plus, I did get some more valuable experience, at a significant cost. So, to those with no SLORs, I have no pity. But for those with only 1 or 2 with one coming, I can feel pity. It took over a month for both of my first 2 to show up.

I knew that...slip of the fingers...(it only happens when I'm typing on this forum - I swear)

actually I'm in Europe now and here it's A&E... (accidents and emergencies)

but you're abolutely right you can get E.D. from the clap ... or from too much whiskey, or perhaps from too much internet porn :meanie:

So, this is addressed to BKN or anyone else who has the answer.

What happens with our LORS if we don't match into EM, but end up doing a prelim year and have to re-enter match next year.

I have good LORS from PD's in great programs(3 EM rotations-2 aways) all honors and good letters, but bad(really bad) board scores and though I applied to 50 programs, I'm pretty worried.

I'm finally addressing my test-taking skills-apparently, it's a processing problem and not knowledge based, and if I don't match, I'll take Step 3 before I reapply. Maybe I'm jumping the gun and someone will see me as a diamond in the RUFF.

MY QUESTION: IF I must reapply next year, what do I do about letters? I mean I won't be doing EM rotations so how do I complete an app?

👍 I finally am getting the name of most of the nurses and techs in our place so when I want something like this done. I say "hey bob, can you get me an ekg or line or whatever on the patient in room 8?" (I wish i could say "the Ms Johnson in room 8" but thats asking too much of me right now..)

1. Any PD will want to see a letter from your current PD.

2. Most Prelim years (except maybe surgery) will have an ED month, make friends and get a faculty member from that month to write a letter.

3. You can probably use one slor form the previous year over again.

hope you don't need to do this.

Hey BKN, think I could get away with wearing this suit at an interview? I have 3 in 3 days, and don't want to wear the same suit 3 times in a row. I know it's not terribly conservative, but at the same time, neither am I (socially, anyway).
I already own the suit, that is why I am asking.

That suit just might get a pretty boy like you beaten up in certain parts of the country.....

I think it's fine. The six button vest seems a bit uh . . . Italian. but we'll all remember you at rank time. 😀

There will be no vest. And mine is a three button suit. I was just wondering.

Yup...I and hopefully a bunch of other applicants listened. I am a non-traditional applicant and am still concerned about my application though it has one letter from my current director and a total of three EM letters (one from med. school the other two from my current program). I am surprised anyone thinks they are going to get an interview without any EM letters but per the earlier entry, I guess if you are lucky (like the girl who essentially sat on her butt and got her #1 pick) who knows.

BKN, is being a prelim. considered unfavorable during the application process(compared to being a 4th-year med. student)? I have publications, a rockin' step 2 score, and good grades-is this less meaningful since I have already graduated?

LOL about someone's ED being more like a closet than a room and communicable diseases one seeks EM attention for (the clap). I needed a laugh..😀

BKN, is being a prelim. considered unfavorable during the application process(compared to being a 4th-year med. student)?

Depends on the program. At my place it would very definitely be a positive. At many others it might be a negative as an institution might lose some medicare money by taking you.

I have publications, a rockin' step 2 score, and good grades-is this less meaningful since I have already graduated?

So I'm sending out a bolus of invites today. Do I have your app?

And we'll certainly remember you. Hello F.P.!

Ex-squeeze me? As an FP, I resemble that remark!

Anyone who showed up for an FM interview wearing a getup like that would be immediately told to button up his shirt and put on some less ostentatious jewelry. His pants are kinda long, too. And, the hat should come off indoors. Sheesh, people...show some class. 😉

Funny I dont think I met any SDN EM folks when I interviewed..

Below is a picture of me in the suit I wore last yr! I did wear the hat BTW...

Not a big deal, but I was just wondering. . .

I'm assuming that by nontrad you mean the older/second career med student. Are they, in your estimation far more prone to this misstep in their application? I can't imagine why they would be more likely than trads to do this.

Apparently, however, my taste (as a nontrad) in suits does tend to be a bit more conservative than that of others in this forum. Oh my.

So I'm slogging through the pile and I keep finding nontrads with not only no SLORs but no letters from EPs at all.

you go to war with the army you have, not the army you want to have.

1. what makes you think it's a "processing problem?"

2. rough is not spelled ruff, which makes me think it's not a processing problem.

that's a zoot suit. very acceptable. nothing to scoff at, assuming you can live up to the swing required to wear one. 😎

and if you don't know what i'm talking about, then it's safe to say you should just smile and move on.

Kent,
I realize you've been donned an "advisor," (which from what I can gather is as close to being an osteopath as one can get without actually being an osteopath), but I'm having a hard time finding a post of yours that doesn't include the winky, which has to be the gayest **** I've ever seen.

I mean, I realize you're FP and all, just like Lee Burnett, which automatically makes you really, really cool. But your posts lack any sort of insight, and smack of a loner GP with nothing better to do than repeat the same drivel over and over on forums that actually have competitive applicants. And the signature "smiley wink" almost makes it too sad to even comment upon.

I hope this has been an eye-opener, Kenny. And not a reason to sulk. Because we really do enjoy seeing Lee's b!tches over here every once in a while. It makes us realize how close we all came to FP. 😉
