hie guys ... all the info you post is priceless.
i have a big concern. i have 2 quaters that i bad grades. one quater i have 4 w's and the other i have 4 f's. 😱 all these are because of a very difficult period when i had to deal with some assualt that happened a year prior to those quaters. i continued to go to school because at that time i was concidered an international student and regardless of my situation they required me to be in school in order for me not to be deported. so i registered for the classes but i did not get the chance to attend and the ins laws are not very flexible. now the rest of my grades before that and after are all A's in the prerequisites and b's in the others. i repeated the courses i had f's in and got all a's. would it be a waste of time for me to apply and which schools do i have the best chances with. my addsas GPA will be very low probably in the 2.8 region because of my F's. also i have some 45 credit hours with all a's that are from a foreign university that were counted towards my graduation but are not on my current transcript so will not be calculated into the adsas gpa. will the schools do their own calculations including credits that adsas does not include. on the application i had to put just a P for pass fpr these classes. they are also prereqs.
please help me i am in a mess of confusion. 😕
oh and i managed to get back on track dealing with my issues and changed my US status so INS is off my back.

thanks guys 🙂

Sounds like the odds are not in your favor to put it mildly, to put it bluntly I do believe you may well be completely screwed. Sorry about your luck.

fill out the apps and hope for the best, difficult to say at this junction. Your grades can be "made-up for" with high DAT scores.

I hope you don't get into any dental schools until you go to a respectable graduate school and get 4.0 from a Masters in something other than Public Health (Try Chemistry, Physics, Biology).

No offense but if you did get in, it would give people one more reason to look down on dentists.

so your reasoning for people looking down on dentists if i get in is because i would not have been admitted with a 4.0? its because of people with this mentality that we have such lousy doctors and dentists. the profession asks for a very academically strong individual but being able to go through difficulty and come out on top of the situation determines the strength that you will have for the rest of your proffesional life.

Some schools make an initial screening and any GPA's that do not reach a minimum will not be considered. However there are many that do not. If you score very well on the DAT that may help your case. Once they exam your file they should see that the 2 semester dip in grades was an anomaly. If you application is strong in other ways the will listen to your reasons for the low GPA.

I think you should stay in school for a bit longer (undergrad, I mean).

You admitted you have a low GPA given 4 F's. It should not come as a shock to you that you should redeem yourself by going to a grad school and getting the top grade in a Masters or whatever.

It's a shame that you have been unable to figure out why schools put so much emphasis on grades by now.

It shows a lot about yourself: Intelligence, Work Habit, Character to name a few.

Yeah, I get you had rough times but that should not be an excuse or a magical token to get you in. I wouldn't respect myself if I had gotten in that way.

Instead, I would pursue a Masters or something that would show Admission Committees what I am capable of. If you did that, everyone should have no reason not to respect you.

Take a deep breath and think about what I said both the first time and second time.

To the OP: First, I'm sorry about your experiences prior to that semester. But I am happy to hear that you are doing well now. Your four W's will not be any problem at all! They don't get added into GPA's and it is obvious you had other commitments or priorities during that semester. So don't worry about that. As for the F's, they will no doubt bring you GPA down, HARD.

A previous 'poster' commented that some schools screen for GPA's and DAT scores before actually looking at applications in detail. Avoid applying to these schools (only if your GPA is below the cut-off). You could call them directly and ask them if they initially screen this way.

I am suprised as to some of the comments made on this thread. If what you say is true, that you've managed all A's and B's, since that semester. Then I simply do not consider you a weak applicant!

Having a GPA that is 2.8 because of 4 F's is better than having a GPA of 3.2

Before I get a zillion posts on my previous comment, let me say that the above statement holds true under one assumption -

That your GPA without the 4 F's would be above 3.6

Would your GPA be above this without the F's?

If so, then go ahead and apply, that's my advice, what do you others think?

I had a GPA similar to yours last year and it is an uphill battle to get into dental school. I would recommend that you apply for a post-baccalaureate program this year while applying to dental school. If you do well in your post-bac, your chances will be greatly increase next year if you don't get into dental school this year. Aim for a GPA of atleast 3.0. And do well on the DAT if you haven't taken it yet.
