Hey guys-

I was just offered a part time clinical rph position in the hospital that I'm currently working as a per diem pharmacist.. I'm a PIC in retail pharmacy (84 hours biweekly) desperate to get out of retail asap. Hourly rate is little higher than my PIC rate due to shift differential (2nd shift) but I'm potentially losing 40% of my guaranteed salary by switching a job.. work environment is nice - friendly coworkers who are willing to help out, since I'm still fairly new to hospital

I'm only couple years removed from pharmacy school so I do have to work full time hours to have some financial stability. It sounds like I can get close to FT hours with extra shifts - mainly from vacation coverage and other hospital locations- but again only 24 hours/week are guaranteed. Would you make the jump from FT retail to part-time hospital position? Any input/advice is appreciated.

I work full-time staff retail and PRN hospital. I'm wrestling with the same questions as you.

This should be entirely based on what do you feel like you want to do for the rest of your life.

Are you comfortable staying in retail, being a "company man?" Are you good enough as a PIC that you won't be replaced by a grad with a lower salary? Are you interested in moving up the chain and eventually being a DL? Do you thrive and enjoy a management job rather than a clinical job? This is assuming you work for CVS or another retailer where you will have actual professional career opportunities as a pharmacist. If you work for Walgreens, get out now.

If no the above, then you may want to make the jump now.

My plan is to stay in my current positions, make as much money as I can working both, for as long as possible. I genuinely enjoy both jobs. But if my hand is forced, I'll probably jump to clinical and take the salary cut.

By the way, how are you handling being PIC and still working per diem hospital? Is it doable?

How did you get this prn job??? I'm also a pic and I've had absolutely no success. Not even an interview.

In your shoes, I would take part-time hospital position and instead of completely quitting retail, switch to part-time or per-diem with them for extra income.
I agree 100% with this. I went from Full-Time Retail and PRN Hospital after graduation to Full-Time Hospital and PRN Retail a few years later (for a little, then quit retail altogether- never looked back).

I would, but then I'm a genius

Time to make money investing on the side, baby! You can spend time on your interests, chase girls etc

Depends on what you're capable of, of course

Update: I turned down a part-time offer then few weeks later FT 7/7 overnight position opened up. Gave my 2 weeks notice and I will be starting my new job next week!
Yes, I thought about your situation some more and you should definitely go to hospital

Don't know about overnight, but it's better to have connections and perhaps more security. Hospital are hotbeds of drama, however, so be prepared. I guess retail can be the same

Inflation/interest rates are potentially coming; corporations work you like slave and you are interchangeable; hospital can have some of the same pressures in their administration but not quite the same. There are far fewer hospitals and hospital opportunities

Its been good so far. Overnight shift has less drama, noise, and you get to learn more since I'm the only rph in the pharmacy. My salary is actually higher than I was in retail so I didn't really lose anything other than sleep schedule so far.
