Have any of you heard of bein granted a full scholarship to any medical school (free ride) from the government or by the school?? If so, how can one be eligible??? Thanks for any type of input.

Miliatary Scholarships are one option from the govt. National Health Corps (primary care) is another possibility but I am not sure they offer full scholarships.

Yes, evidently a friend of my father's has a child who was granted a full ride at both her instate school and another school. She had great stats though (4.0, >35 MCAT etc).

For us plebians, there are scholarships if you join the military or if you do primary care in underserved area for a certain amount of time.

I am not sure about following years, but DMU does give some full tuition scholarships if certian requirments are met, 3.5 GPA, 30MCAT.

it's the entire four years provided you maintain a B average.

the institution. also, this person is a white male and there are other people at the institution with better stats who did not receive the scholarship, which is how i figured it must be based on more than stats.

Can you apply for the scholarship?? or is it given out based on the decision of the school(s)?

Seems like only the school(s) are givin them out, and not the gov.

the ones that i know about you were automatically considered when you were accepted to the school and filled out the fafsa. no extra forms to fill out, but it can't hurt to ask each school you are considering.

As far as I know, medical schools LIVE off super high tuition money and don't give significant scholorships. If you maintain the highest average in the school, they might give you a 1k/yr deduction, but that is it. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's all about money. Anyone who thinks they will get a significant scholorship is nuts, since they don't happen except for very very rare exceptions in one or two schools maybee like if you are a genious or a super underrperesented minority. There is one way to get a full scholorship. That is to join the army. The guys in my school that did that pay nothing for school plus the army pays for all books and gives them a stipend (plus they get the title of second luitenant). Of course, you need to spend a couple of years working for the army after school.

As someone else on this forum has suggested, I would strongly advise against joining the army unless you really want to serve your country. Being in the military is not for everyone. If this country is at war with another you may be called away. In any case, the military will temporarily own you. If you're ready for that, well, great -- the military needs you. Definitely research what being in the army would entail first (with more than just a recruiter, who won't share the less pleasant parts). Otherwise, take loans.

Here's a thread with a post by someone in the military:

Good luck.

I was lucky enough to recieve a half tuition scholarship and I'm not an URM and it is from the school.
