Hi!

I understand that dental schools will give heavy weight on the person's DAT and GPA. Now, I don't mean to discriminate or be malicious whatnot to single folks. However, will dental schools (like UOP, USC, UCLA etc) "give slack" to my menial 3.1 GPA?

There's just no way I could raise my GPA with my course load - I could probably maintain it. Next semester (my last) is going to be a bit easier at 18 units. Will they look at course load and grades earned with leniency if one earned it while working part-time and married with kids?

Thanks.

Your extra responsibilities of dad, employee, etc. will likely be examined by the the adcoms if your grades and DAT scores make the first cut. Hopefully you will score an interview and be able to discuss how you balanced your priorities, BUT remember not to make it sound like you're complaining that you have more on your plate- because it was YOUR decision. It was your choice to get married, make a kid, then take on a job in addition to your sadistic course load of eighteen credits AND attempt to keep your grades up all at the same time. So I don't know, maybe the adcoms will respect your ability to juggle everything or maybe they will think you like to take on more than you can handle. I give props to you for making it all come together, I don't know if I could pull off what you are doing. Same to Javadi and Gavin and all the other dental student dads. Best of luck!! 🙂

they'll definitely consider it. 3.1 with kids is still good. Your DATs will make or break you now. My class had 30+ ppl with kids, and all of them are top 50 in our class.

I second the comment about"it was your choice!"

I had my first kid while I had o-chem and physiology. It was quite the adjustment and I went through the

"MY WIFE IS PREGNANT, SHE HAD A BABY, I AM WORKING 25 HOURS A WEEK, I HAVE 16 CREDITS, AAAUUUGGGGGHHHHH!"

I have since adjusted and despite two kids, 16 hours work a week, and upper division credits, I am managing. It is difficult because they are more important than school, but tell them to make sacrifices and in the future they can buy anything they want....Schools do take it into consideration, but make sure you don't make it your EXCUSE for having a 'okay' gpa. A 3.1 isn't bad. GPA and DAT are the two best things, so make sure they are as good as can be!

I don't know whether to be more impressed with your work load, or your decision to go with blue fonts!

Remember, it's not only the DAT and GPA that will get you in, it's your 'overall' application - good luck.
