I wanted to know if you could give some info on the future of stent therapies. With all the current talk about stents and their issues, what will the future hold for stents. Will they be phased out and will CABG make a comeback, or will the problems with stents be dealt with and will we see a new generation of stents with less complications?

I doubt traditional CABG will make a comeback, because most patients find the idea of stents less daunting than surgery REGARDLESS of vaguely-defined differences in outcome. If people are given the option between open-heart surgery and some less invasive procedure, I'll bet the majority will opt for the latter...even if the outcome is slightly less promising. Doesn't make sense, but instinctively, for those living moment to moment (most), it's the favorite option.

Also, even if CABG were to make a comeback...it would probably be short lived. Cardiologists would come back in a few years with a modified procedure, eliminating or (at least) dampening any issues with safety or efficacy. It's just the general trend toward technology and less-invasive procedures, so any win for CABG surgery would be only a temporary one.

This comes from a guy considering both fields but leaning toward CT surgery. I'd love to believe stents were falling away to the good-old reliable method, but people are simply too eager for ANY other option.
