GA-PCOM 2009- Where are you?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys,

You think there is any particular attire that we should wear tomorrow? I guess it really doesn't matter, but I didn't want to show up under or over dressed! I hope all you have a safe trip to Atlanta and I will see some of you tomorrow!

Hey, why don't you guys reconsider going to another school so that I can get off the wait list at PCOM-GA. Anyone interested in going to some bulldog games come football season?

Smitty

Im planning on going to some bulldawg games next year if my friends who hav'nt graduated yet can hook me up with tickets. Do you go to UGA?

No, I don't go to UGA, but managed to play college ball and love it in all of its glory. I've only seen one SEC game, Tennessee, which was amazing but looking forward to see the dawgs. If it works out with this whole wait list thing and we manage to find time in between the studies, we should get a group together to grill up some burgers down at UGA. Congrats to all those who have been accepted and I hope I see you in August.

Hey, you guys (and gals) have fun tomorrow. Learn a lot for those of us that cannot attend.

sketches, welcome to the club 😎

jsmitty, we're pulling for you :luck:

Hi everyone, I just checked this forum and I was kind of surprised that nobody had posted anything about the financial aid meeting yet, or least on this forum. Anyway, what did everyone think? I was really impressed with everything they told us and I’m getting excited about next year even though it’s over 3 months away. Was anybody really impressed when they said we have the highest GPA and 3rd highest MCAT out of all the DO schools this year? because I sure am.

I am uber excited now. I was excited before, but now seeing how excited the administration is it pumped me up even more. I couldn't believe that we had such high GPA's and MCAT's for our first class. I think that is awesome! The meeting was a great idea in my opinion because it really helped us break the ice. Now the first few days of orientation will be less stressful, since most of us have made some kind of connection. I really liked everyone I met, I think our class is going to be a lot of fun. There just seemed to be a lot of great personalities in the room, even though I didn't get to meet everyone. I can't wait til August. Hopefully we'll be able to get together this summer and chill before school starts.
brent311, what were you wearing? I met a lot of people from SDN, but I don't think we met today?

I am excited as well, everyone seemed really nice. I wonder how many students actually attended because I too did not get to meet everyone. I am sending my money off Monday, so I can finally relax for a bit. That is until I start doing some research into these private loans to cover all of my living expenses. I went by Walden Trace and was kind of put off by the lady that gave us(my parents and I) a tour, she was really brief and almost seemed bothered by our presence. I did however stumble upon another place called 5375 Sugarloaf Parkway, and this place was NICE. It is less than 5 min from campus and only 4 years old. They have continental breakfast Mon-Fri and a lady that will wash, dry, and fold one load of your clothes everyday, and not to mention a washer and dryer in the 1 bedroom, and guys this is only a taste of the amenties they offer. The prices are afforable as well, about the same as Walden Trace. The lady that helped us (Dana) was really welcoming and I have decided to stay there this year. Anyways, I hope to see everyone during orientation. What does everyone think about the delay of the symbolic white coat cermony? I for one think changing the event to the day of the grand opening is a grand idea because it will be the icing on the cake per se. Our experience is going to one of a kind. 🙂 Everything is progressing quite nicely!!

Bye

I totally agree with the last three posts. Everyone I talked with at the meeting was very nice, and I have no doubt that our time at GA-PCOM is going to be amazing. It was also good to hear that the local community leaders and osteopathic association are just as excited about the school as we are.

At least seven of us here on SDN attended the meeting, so we should be able to cover any questions that come up. If not, I am sure that the wonderful PCOM staff will be able to assist you 😉

I did some apartment shopping while I was in town and I will post my observations later this weekend if anyone is interested. Until then, I just want to say that before any of you sign a lease, check to see if one of your classmates has already decided to live there. Most apartments give bonuses to their tenants for referrals, and we could all benefit from this. For example, I plan to live at The Reserve on Meadow Church Road, so if anyone out there decides to sign a lease with them, contact me beforehand and I will gladly split the referral bonus with you.

I think the six-hour drive is starting to catch up with me, so I'm going to end it here. It was great meeting everyone today. If I missed you, I'm sure that we will get another chance to get together soon.

Wasn't there an opportunity to tour the school? If someone went and took some pics, maybe they could post them on biosailgirls photo site?

How many future students were at the FA meeting?

The room was filled with students and parents, but if I had to estimate there were at least 55-60 students in attendance. The tour was great, we all went following lunch. Dr Evans took us in all in groups and we had to wear hard hats. The school is progressing quite nicely, he explained that they were actually 2 weeks ahead of schedule. There were constructions guys working while we were on tour, and by the way it is looking the school should be completed long before classes start on the 15th. Dr. Evans said they are expecting the key for occupancy by the 1st of August, and orientation would probably not start until the 10th of August. Our grand opening is suppose to be a big event and the govenor, other state officials, and those of importance are suppose to attend. Our white coat cermony will be held during the grand opening of the school. Our schedules will be exactly like that of PCOM Philly. There will not be any dress codes, but professionalism out in the community will be expected. Tuition for 2005-2006 has been set at 33,597, and they said regardless of your EFC you would be able to get 38,500 from Stafford Loans. They gave us some applications for private loans. The financial aid director(Zeli) said that award letters should be going out within two to three weeks. Dr. Evans said that the school was going to be student centered and they will try to do everything possible to accommodate us i.e school hours etc. He also said parking was going to be free which is great. They are also investing another 1.5 millions dollars within the next two years to develop some research labs for the PHDs. He also said the property has appreciated 30% since they acquired it. This school is going to provide such a stimulus to the already fast growing county of Gwinnett. Sketches, I agree with you on the referral situation. I will be staying at 5375 Sugarloaf about 4 min from school and if anyone is interested in staying there say I(Tiffany Sanders) referred you and I will split the referral payout as well. If we play it right we could all make a little extra money. PM is there are any questions.

Just a few more things:

Nobody asked about mandatory class attendance ( I didn't think anyone would want to ask the dean this question at the meeting ) but from the way
Dr. Evans made it sound they were going to make it very easy to catch up on a lecture if you missed it. He said the lectures will all be available online and in addition all the lectures would be put in Mp3 format so we can download them (very cool!). No microscopes (yahoo!) all digital slides of pathology (personally I hated micro in college). Everything will be state of the art and wireless. I forgot to ask about 3 and 4 year rotation sites but I guess we will cross that bridge when we come to it. Everyone was great at the meeting, and it really sounds like they want this to be a great experience. All of the armed forces were there and I have the info if anyone wants to go that route. Personally I think you are signing your life away but it is a great service to the country. Hope we covered everything.

This may sound odd, but this is one of the things I'm most excited about. I was dreading having to do histo and searching through the slide box for some random slide and then searching that slide for 30 minutes for something that more than likely won't be on the practical. I am in parasitology now, and the lab is the absolute bain of my biology-undergrad existence--I actually have to spend this evening studying in the lab for my Monday practical *yuck*. I think with it being digital for us, we can spend more time in lab looking at more information instead of searching slides the whole time. Very cool 👍

Glad to hear everyone had a great time at the meeting. I thought the school had a very professional attitude and I looking forward to August. Brian brought up a good point about attendance policy. I don't think anyone wanted to ask that question to Dr. Evans. I wonder if anyone could find out from a current PCOM student if they have to attend class. Obviously all labs will be mandatory and most everyone will attend lecture, but I hope they don't have a sort of mandatory policy where you fail automatically if you don't attend everyday. Mercer med school has this but their lecture time is far less 9-12, three times a week.

Other than that, I thought the meeting was very informative and I like the make up of the class. It seemed very diverse in terms of age, ethnicity, and geographical distribution. I didn't get to meet all you SDNers but everyone else I met seemed nice. I did a little apartment shopping afterwards. I went up to Sterling Side and the 1 bedrooms seem adequate for me. However, if anyone knows of better in close proximity to the school, please let me know. I will check out the reserve as well as the sugarloaf place. I am trying to find a pretty cheap one bedroom since we will still have our house in Macon.

I posted this list earlier of apartments and proximity to the school. If I missed any nearby, please add them. The time and distances are from mapquest - I didn't validate them 😀

Also, I can get an employee discount on IBM laptops if anyone is looking to buy one. The T series is great. Disclaimer: I don't know anything about laptop hardware/servicing/etc, but have never had any trouble with mine. PM me if interested.

Anyone have pictures from the FA meeting of the school? Please post on my website if you do. Thanks.
Any other interesting info from the meeting? I didn't get to make it🙁

Hi everyone! My name is Crystal and my fianace Doug and I just got our acceptances for PCOM-GA today (actually he got his a while ago and I just got mine today), but with my acceptance today we finally know this is the school for us! We're very excited!

However we are both very nervous. Since I just got accepted today we didn't get to go to the finacial aid thing and we know nothing about the money, housing, pretty much anything about the school except for the awesome curriculm that Dr. Evans spoke about during my interview. We need some help/advise/anything ASAP!

A little bit about us:
I'm 23 years old from a rural-ish town a little noth of Tampa. I went to a university in upstate NY and now I am in Miami doing an AmeriCorp volunteer year.

Hi, I'm Doug, originally from Long Island, NY, now residing in Miami, FL, working as a high school science teacher through AmeriCorp.

So if any of you guys can give us some advice/info on either financial aid or housing for PCOM GA, we'd like to hear from you. We don't know anything about this $2000 or anything of the sort. Any help? Thanks. We're very excited.

Congradulations to you both! The financial aid workshop was pretty cool. The fellow classmates I met were all really friendly and very excited about our class. Basically PCOM wants to make sure that we have all filled out the financial aid application you will get in the mail. They also want a $2K deposit by May 15th to secure your spot. If you need additional money like myself there are private loans available. They passed out some private loan info here are a few of the websites : www.nelnet.net www.northstar.org
www.studentloan.com ...the interest on these types of loans varies but a few of them were around 5.5% based on credit. Various military branches also gave their spill on what they can do for you during the program. Lastly we ended up taking a tour of the school which was awesome! The floorplan was very open and inviting. Hit me up if you need to know more-B 👍

Congrats guys. Welcome to the class. I think if you read over the posts we have written (if you have time) you will find some great info that we have been talking about for the past few months. If you give me your email address I will add you to our email thread we have as well. Welcome again. We are all very excited.

From reading some of the posts it looks like there is a large group of people that are excited about going to PCOM-GA. I figured I would post something on this thread since my plans are to attend the school in the fall. I went to the workshop Friday, and I came away ready for August to get here.

I also wanted to post that I have a townhouse in Lawrenceville on Highway 29. It is 8-10 minutes away and have two rooms that are open to be rented. It is in a new development called Patriot's Point. Get up with me if you are interested and we can talk details.

Rob

Welcome Crystal, Doug, and Rob! Congratulations on your acceptances. When are you all planning to move?

Hello everyone, after a long day of trying to confirm my email account I have successfully entered into the thread. I am also going to GA-PCOM, which is obvious because I am posting here.

I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in May 2004. I have been working as a Paramedic for 2 years now and having a lot of fun. I am really excited about coming to GA for school. Although the rent prices have placed a small damper on my excitement. I am really nervous about funding for medical school. I attended the FA workshop but I don't think it helped calm me any. Basically, they told me I am going to owe a lot of money in the end UGH!!!! :scared:

I really want a roommate or two. I realize that some people might think they don't want to live with someone they don't know but think of all the positives. You will always have someone to talk to when your frustrated or confused. You can study together. Best of all, it cuts your rent payments by at least $200, not to mention splitting the telephone, electric, water and cable bill.

PLEASE BE MY ROOMMATE!!! Wow that sounds desperate but right now I am. 🙂

I would just like to say congrats to you for your decision on GA-PCOM. I believe I interviewed with you back in January. I pm'ed you about my place.

They said they're not required, but how many of you will be purchasing laptops? I have heard the pros and cons of having one at school. Some say that it's good because it's easier to take notes on the computer, others say that you get all you need in handouts. Either way I'll definitely have a desktop computer at home.
I'm still not sure which way I'm going to go, but if I do get one, I think I may get an apple. I'm very prone to viruses and apple's are supposedly virus-free. We also get a discount with apple.com for being a student.

Im in the same situation where I will need a roomate to lower cost ect... At the financial meeting I forgot to fill out the roomate form. Does anyone know how I can get on this list? and if I get on the list, will it be sent out to everyone else looking for roomates?

I talked to the lady that was in charge of that, and she said that there wasn't a way for people to see the list without actually physically going to the school. You might be able to get on the list by contacting someone at the office and perhaps they will be able to send you the sheet to fill out.

About the laptop question by biosailgirl I have purchased one because in my line of work I have become use to reading papers on the computer and I found it easier than to have to carry alot of paper. As with the viruses the mac's are finally being attacked by the people with too much time on their hands. If you have a virus protection program on your pc your should be fine.

I guess I'll move up in August 1, but I still haven't even thought about housing because I'm still thinking about the desposit!

Oh, so anyone who has been to the campus, which are the closet apartment complexes to the school? I see the miles, but I'm not really sure which are actually close enough to be easy to get to school quick?

Besides the few already mentioned, does anyone else know where everyone else is living?

When I was down there I noticed the following complexes to be the easiest to drive to the campus in order of ease:

The Reserve at Sugarloaf
Gables Sugarloaf
5375 Sugarloaf Parkway
Wesley Herrington

What I would recommend to anyone looking for an apartment down there go or call PROMOVE. They are super nice people. They are located off the Pleasant Hill Road exit (the same exit you used to get to your interview). Their phone number is 1-800-742-1883. You can talk to a consultant and tell them what you are looking for ie price range, what you want included in the apartment, the area, blah blah blah. Then they will run a search and find all the apartments that fit your criteria. Then they will rank them, giving you your top ten choices. They will map them out for you. Then all you gotta do is look at the apartments. They will stay with you till you get your lease and they will inform you of all specials that are running. The best part about it is it is COMPLETELY FREE!!!! All you have to do is mention them as the one you recommended you to the apartment. Some of the apartment complexes are special tax grant apartments (something to that effect) where the people that live there have to make a certain income which students do not qualify for so looking on your own can be rather difficult. PROMOVE would probably be your best bet. When I tried looking for apartments on my own I spent 4 hours and only saw 2 apartments. 👎 After PROMOVE, I spent 4 hours looking at apartments and saw 7 complexes. 👍

I am planning on living with BringontheReign in his townhome because I refuse to pay $700 for an 1 bedroom, 600 sq foot apartment.

cjay - if you have any questions about the following complexes I can tell you
Reserve at Sugarloaf, Gables Sugarloaf, Wesley Herrington, 5375 Sugarloaf Parkway, Walden Trace, The Madison at River Sound and The Preserve at Legacy Park
(really all these complexes are close and easily accessible to the campus just because this part of town does not have heavy traffic and you are going to be travelling the opposite way of rush hour traffic)

Congrat's to the newcomers 😀

Anyone have preadmission physical examination forms or immunization forms from PCOM? I couldn't find them online and don't recall receiving one in the mail.

I just emailed [email protected] and copied Dr. Evans for assistance. If I get the forms, I'll send them out on the email list.

House hunting trip is on the horizon! I can't wait.

Cheers everyone

Should we start our own post for people who are looking for roommates? It seems as if gaining access to the housing forms we filled out during the fin. aid workshop will be problematic. Any ideas? -B

That would probably be a good idea, maybe send an email out to the group asking for interested persons. I have a family so I'm not looking for roomies.

I will be attending the PCOM Georgia campus starting in August. I'm looking for a female roommate to share fun times and our medical school experience together. My parents may be buying a condo/townhouse in the Duluth, Suwanee, or Lawrenceville area close to the school, and I am looking for a female roommate to live with and pay rent. If you are interested, please PM me, and I will give you my phone number so that we can get to know one another and possibly meet beforehand to see if we are compatible. I look forward to meeting all of you in the fall!

I was just wondering if anyone was looking for a roommate or has already found a place to live that still needs a roommate. If you are, please PM me. I just recently got accepted, and I don't have a list or any further information from PCOM-GA. I have only gotten an acceptance letter with instructions on sending in a form and a deposit. If anyone can be of assistance since I feel like I'm running out of time to find a place to live and roommate, I would really appreciate it. I look forward to meeting all of you at orientation. Also, could someone tell me any information that you've received from PCOM-GA since you were accepted since I have no further information from them...such as when is orientation? All I know is that the first day of class is August 15th. Thanks again for your help!

Congrats....Welcome to the class! I am personally glad to see another South Carolinian as a member of the class...seems like most everyone I met at the Fin Aid meeting was from Georgia. Anyway, I wouldn't panic yet... a lot of people at the Fin Aid seminar had not found a place to live, and I am sure they are plenty of people interested in roommates. There was a list of people who needed roommates passed around at the Fin Aid workshop I believe, but I think people are having a hard time accessing it-maybe someone could put something together on here? I know I have not found a place to live yet...I will be heading down sometime soon I guess to look around at apartments and such. You haven't missed too much from PCOM-Ga either...I assume you missed the financial aid meeting, but other than that, we really aren't that much ahead of you. If you have any further questions, I am sure your new classmates and I will try to help you any way we can! Orientation starts the week of August 8th, with August 10th being the most likely date, according to Dr. Evans.

Hello all,

How is everyone progressing along as far as deposit and housing are concerned? I sent my deposit off on the 3rd and got a receipt back on Friday of last week. Now I am looking for my award letter so I can determine if I have to look into private loans. I presume that I will be receiveing one before the month ends. I wonder if there will be more scholarships available next year? Anyways, I am counting down the days until I move, which will be June 27, 2005. I will have plently of time to get aquainted with the area before classes start, and I just happen to have a old college roommate and friend that is a 3rd grade teacher in the area. Good Luck my fellow trailblazers for we are about to embark on a long tedious journey through the unknowns and knowns of the osteopathic realm of medicine.

Just paid the deposit and made it official. I haven't decided on housing yet, but the reserve at sugarloaf was very nice and close.
Is there going to be a lounge area for students? Perhaps the students could pitch in together to get a pool or ping pong or foosball table? or maybe a basketball goal somewhere in the parking lot. I expect everyone will need a place to relax on study breaks.

We will definitely need a basketball goal or something because I wanna show my mad skills on the court. LOL!

I prefer the ping pong table. Challenge anyone? That is, if we get to do this.... It's a great idea though! Maybe we'll have to start a student gov type thing and go through that.

Hey everyone, I too will be attending GAPCOM this fall. I wasn't able to go the financial aide meeting, so reading all your posts have been so helpful and are getting me excited for the fall! I havent even begun to look for housing yet, so i kinda wanted to see which apartment complexes people were leaning towards??

also, does anyone know when fafsa needs to be filled out? i am completely clueless when it comes to this stuff (which makes me think that i should've probably gone to that financial aid meeting), so i would appreciate some input! thanks and looking forward to meeting all of you guys!

Good idea, I will certainly pitch in for either distraction 😀 I don't know if there is space? I think a student government will be formed if we ask for it - PCOM has one.

Above someone suggested
The Reserve at Sugarloaf
Gables Sugarloaf
5375 Sugarloaf Parkway
Wesley Herrington
I also liked AMLI McGinnis Ferry.
There are almost too many options...

FAFSA along with other papers in the financial aid packet should be filled out as soon as possible.

I hate say that I'm giving up my seat at GA-PCOM. I just got in off a waitlist and will be attending school nearer my family. You guys will have a great school and terrific opportunities. The pro-con list was tough but this works better for my wife and son.

Hopefully, a deserving waitlister will now get in. Good luck and best wishes to you all.

Good Luck Ortho. Congrats on getting in where you truly want to be.

I agree. There are many fine people that I was looking forwared to spending several grueling years with 😉 👍

Congrats Ortho,

Although I am sorry that we didn't get to meet. You would have been an excellent addition to our class. Good luck in all your endeavors.

Good luck with everything Ortho and congrats that everything worked out for you 😳 !

Just a quick note to those interested in hooking up with a roommate. A new thread was just started entitled: GA-PCOM Roommates?. Please post if your interested....

hey guys,

I just got my acceptance letter today and am really excited about the fall. I was wondering if Dr. Evans is planning on having another "accepted students" day in the summer for everyone to meet up. I was told about a BBQ they were planning.

Congratulations on your acceptance! I have not heard of an official ‘accepted students day’ as of yet, but I know some of us are planning to get together this summer on our own. Do you have any more details about the BBQ?

On a related note, I am moving into my apartment next Saturday (May 28th), so PM me if any of you are interested in meeting up.

Again, congrats on your acceptance and welcome to the thread 😀

congrats ttpatel, Looks like another NC person going down to GAPCOM. I never heard about any accepted students get together, but I think I would make a trip down I85 for that.
