MCG's admissions committee is meeting this week, tomorrow or Friday. Had an interview yesterday and an admissions staff member told our group about it.

Toll-like receptors.

I knew what they were. He never actually said "TLRs", either; I was asking him if he worked with TLRs. He said pattern recognition receptors. Toll like receptors are one of the types of pattern recognition receptors, the others being scavengers, sugar receptors, NOD like receptors, and a few more. I asked specifically if he worked with TLRs because I think they are cool. I like weird signalling mechanisms.

How was the interview? Did they give you the impression that you might be reviewed this week?

The interviews went well in my opinion, they only had good things to say about me at the end of the interview. Cross my fingers, they send me an acceptance.

I have high hopes that I will be reviewed this week but I'm not expecting to hear anything until April, like everyone else that hasn't heard back yet. I do think my interviewer liked me and what I had to offer but I'm quite sure they have enough to keep them busy at this meeting. But hopefully Ill be up at the next meeting.

Any mercer wed calls? I didn't even think about until now...

No, I wish dd. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the April time period

Is it just me, or do the MCG acceptances seem really "stratified" compared to Mercer? It seems like MCG has had only three or so rounds of MASS acceptances, whereas Mercer accepts two or three people every week? Maybe that was only while I was actively scrutinizing every piece of news I could get my hands on (I haven't heard of any acceptances for some time now.)

They're all stratified...against me!! 😡

Mercer said they were slowing down in the beginning of Feb. They wanted to make sure they had places open for their final interviews.

Yes, this is what they told us at my interview (last week of Jan).

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like many of the SDNers left on here haven't heard. Near I can figure, there are two or three of us waiting to hear and we all had late jan/early feb interviews. This puts them having 2-3 times to review us to date

Not the best news, but I guess we'll have to see about that april acceptance thing.

I interviewed at MCG earlier this week. According to one of the admissions staff, today (Thurs) is there last interview day. Then, counting today, the committee will meet 9 times more to accept/waitlist/deny all the applicants. The director of admissions told our group that the school will accept all 190 slots by the end of this month. So, by April 15th or so, all interviewees should have a letter indicating your status.

As a side note, my first interview went very well (adcom member). However, my second interview was miserable. Evidently, the person originally scheduled had other obligations, so an attending at the hopsital was asked to fill in. He didn't have my file, and he was not happy with the situation. Hopefully, the interview went well enough, but it was over in less than 15 minutes. He kept asking if my file was available from several secretaries/staff members. When they said no, he acted really angry. When I gave him my evaluation sheet/envelope he opened it then wanted to know was that all I had to give him. He was not happy when I said that I had nothing else to offer. He seemed distracted during the interview. He asked me the same question 2-3 times in different ways. Each time I answered, he acted as though he didn't hear the first time. I thought about saying something to the admissions office, but I decided not to. Anyone else faced anything like this at MCG?

If you feel you've been shafted, you should contact/write a letter to the dean asap, before you get a decision on your case

DEFINITELY say something. Just be real quick and concise, not like you are complaining but just tell them exactly what you told us. MCG wants students to go there, not push them away.

Ok I had an interview with Mercer pretty recently and here are the dates that were given to us

Next adcom meeting: March 19th
Final Interview Date: March 26th
and from this sheet of paper in front of me:
"All acceptance letters will be out by March 30th of the matriculation year"

Just giving the Mercer hopefuls a heads up, good luck to us all

MCG interviews are closed file. This person having your file at all would be against university policy.

Edit- Also, sorry about the situation. That sucks.

okay, I hear people applying to emory, MCG, and mercer,..but what about that other allopathic school? I apologize I don't remember the school's name at this moment 😳

I will be turning in my AMCAS this june, but I have not yet finalized a list of schools I will be applying to. My fellow GA residents, I am wondering what other schools are you applying to besides the state schools? Any information is greatly appreciated , thank you!

Morehouse is the other allopathic school.

Spoke with Ms. Putnam,

She was very friendly, but can give very little information (as expected). It sounds like there is going to be meetings on both the 19th and 26th of March to determine the final acceptances. There will be a meeting on April 2nd to determine the waitlist. There are quite a few spots available in both Macon and Savannah.

hope this helps

Thank you Skymastre and GTstormin! I just marked all those dates on my calendar. Appreciate the heads up.🙂

See they say this, but one of my interviewers knew stuff about me that had to of come from my file, so I'm not entirely sure if the closed/open file stuff is optional or what.

And to medstud2be, I'm not sure if it's mcg or mercer, but one of the schools will let you request another interview if they feel you may have been treated unfairly.

Mcg's is closed file but my interviewer said that it may change in the upcoming years. But of the ad com members there three members that sift through the files and choose the people for interviews... So you might have gotten ones of those people.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but its Mercer.

I'm not going to complain. I felt that I did my best, and surely the adcom member interview would be the most important.

When I interviewed at Mercer, we were told there were only 2 spots at Mercer for all 4 years, and about 10 for 2/2 years Macon/Savannah. Of course this probably changed since some people have probably withdrawn for less expensive schools.

I think there were only 10 spots for 2/2 from the beginning. Surely somebody picked that track? Huh, that is funny. I almost picked 2/2 because I thought it would fill up first! (You know, so I could think it over and switch if I needed to.)

I went to check the mail today, and there was a thick, "offical appearing" envelope. For a minute, I thought it was a letter from MCG.

Hahaha! Of course, that would be irrational since I interview there last week.

Ahhhh, I HATE junk mail.

Of course! You impressed them so much that they called an impromptu meeting just to accept you!! Congratulations?

I have also seen quite a few of these 8.5x11 "official" looking envelopes in the past few days, and every time I see one I get a bit choked up... even though I'm not waiting to hear back from anyone... lol. Good luck!🙄

More than a few times I'd get to the mailbox and find at least a half dozen thick letters, and my heart starts racing and I'll be thinking, "at least one has to be from a school." But no, they'll all be credit card offers 😡 I don't need any more f'ing credit cards!!!

Is the consensus then that if you want to get into MCG these days without having a 4.0 and a 40, you have to apply early decision? Please discuss - would love to hear this cycle's thoughts...

Well, the average MCAT/GPA for early admission is the same as the MCAT/GPA for regular admission, so it shouldn't matter much, but I'd say you get a better 'crack at it if you do EDP.

(I'm sure all of you know they accept about a third or more of their class EDP)

Edit- Whether you do EDP really depends on your MCAT; u r taking in April, right? I would say do EDP if you get 29-32. Under 29 you don't have much shot. Over 32 and you'll get in regular decision. With exactly 32 it depends on your breakdown. If your GPA is still ~3.6 (which is still MCG's average GPA) or higher then you should be fine. Just don't get below 29.

Wow, where did you hear that? I guess I can scratch MCG off my list 🙁

Don't get ahead of yourself. MCG's mcat averages are right at about 30. So that means people get in with above and below that. They don't have a class full of people who got 30 on their mcat.

very true. And to reiterate, if you get in EDP, you would probably get in regular too (vice versa). There is no reason to apply EDP unless you are sure MCG is your fav. Remember, if you get passed over in EDP, that means you won't get to add other schools until after decisions (October).

Just don't get below 29.

This is misleading. I know someone who got in ED this year with a 26, and she was not a URM. Granted, she had a 4.0, but still...If you bring plenty to the table, then a <29 MCAT won't immediately kill your application at MCG.

EDIT: I should probably add a caveat. Your section scores are fairly important too. Someone who makes all 9s on his or her MCAT would have a better shot than someone who went 12-12-6, especially if that 6 was on a science section.

First off, a VR 6 will kill your application MUCH faster than a BS or PS 6.

But you are right about the sub-29 scores. Thing is, the person I was talking to had a 3.6 (as did I); a 26 would not have worked for us.

Otherwise you are right-on. A 9-9-9 with otherwise good credentials has a shot at MCG.

Yeah, good shot, but definitely not great. I have a 10v-8p-9b with above a 3.9 and am struggling. So if you can, do like bodonid said and get a 29 or above, if nothing else to save yourself a great deal of strife.

Hey, Panic:

I found the website for those cartoons. They're kind-of funny! (And kind-of weird.) Case in point:

I wasted an hour... but in a good way. Thumbs-up! nataliedee.com

I love it!
Married to the Sea and Toothpaste for Dinner are also amazing.

I will be applying to all the GA in-state schools. What out-state schools GA people are applying to? SC right?

USC is pretty restrictive re: non-residents, and MUSC is even worse. If you're a rural app, you should look into East Tennessee and Eastern Virginia. SUNY Upstate has no residency preference, so everyone has an equal chance in that regard.

Yeah, the SC schools are restrictive; you need to have close ties to even get an interview as out of state.

And if you apply early enough, you should look into Rosalind Franklin and George Washington. Both get a lot of apps (GW gets around 10k), but their stats appear to be less competitive than MCG's.
