Gabbe vs. Williams

I have my first OB audition rotation coming up in 3 weeks and I want to order one of the OB staple books. Which do you prefer Gabbe or Williams and why?

I hope you are not ordering either book for the sole purpose of your "audition" rotation as it would be overkill. Your focus should be on fitting well within the team, working hard, and (equally important) examining the program to see if it fits you and what you're looking for. Most attending, fellow, resident are aware of the student's knowledge level and look more to see if the student "fits" within the team.

Having said that, if you're looking for an obstetrical text long term, they are both great choices. After having read both a couple of times cover to cover (through the course of residency/fellowship), I definitely favor Gabbe for several reasons: 1) it is an easier read, 2) it covers basic, normal pregnancy better, and 3) there is no specific focus on the "Parkland way." The latter is an important and fantastic item, has contributed greatly to our field, but is not always congruent with how obstetrics is practiced outside of UTSW.

I also prefer Gabbe for a more current approach, easier to read, better graphics. I will sell you my copy of Williams!

No apology needed as that is why we are all here (to learn and share). Among folks in obstetrics, Williams is often associated with the practice patterns at Parkland Hospital (UTSW), which is a phenomenal training institution (obligatory shout out to my former senior fellow from UTSW). I believe this is predominantly because they have rigorous algorithms/guidelines as the high volume necessitates such. Nevertheless, in the text, you'll often see a mention of "we," where the author refers to the practice standard at Parkland. Hence, my use of the phrase "the Parkland way."
