Hey all! I have already found the website about gaining residency in Kentucky for tuition and fee purposes (it was really confusing!) but I was writing to see if anyone knows EXACTLY what I need to do or if they have done it. I am trying to gain residency in Kentucky during the "lag" year (after graduation, before medical school). Can this be done? If so, how and is it easy? I graduate college in May 2004 and hopefully will matriculate fall 2005. I have strong Kentucky ties (I am originally from there, parents moved, long story) and I am taking the MCAT in April (2003). Thank you for any comments. If you PM me, let me know on the thread! Thanks guys!!! 🙂

Ask Mongoose. He grew up in KY but moved to TN. I seem to remember him saying that he was going to be able to get Ky resident status before we started med school. Or you can just ask some of the Financial Aid office people at whatever school you are wanting to go to about how it works.

Good luck on the mcat.

Thanks KYGrlDr. How can I get a hold of Mongoose? I just need to know how easy this is especially since I decided to go to school out of state (right across the KY border). Also, I have family still in Kentucky (sister). Would I be able to move in with her? I just need to know what to do. I don't want to "waste" a year after college just to get another disappointment.

You can find mongoose usually in the Lounge or in Allo. What you should do is just search for him and then PM or email him. This situation varies from school to school so that is probably why you aren't getting many replies. If I'm not mistaken, schools generally use a certain period of time, say for example one year, of living in the state while not being a student as enough to be a resident. I dont know, though.

Just a little info on getting in-state residency in Ohio (know nothing about KY, sorry).

If you buy a house in the state, or marry an in-state resident (assuming US citizenship), u get it automatically. Otherwise, u work for a year, and have to show them a copy of your taxes. They may also ask for paystubs and utility bills.

There can be a lot of scrutiny from a med school, because so much money is involved. One strategy to prevent this is to sign up for classes at a community college, and go through the residency seeking process there. Once one school in the state has granted residency, it is nearly impossible for another school to deny it.

I had worked as a teaching assistant in Ohio for nine months, and did not meet the salary minimum to qualify for residency. A strict interpretation would have precluded residency because I came to Ohio primarily to attend school. A more flexible interpretation saved me a lot of money.
