Hi all,

Like most undergraduates, I have moved back home due to COVID-19. Most likely, I will be here until the fall semester (hopefully) begins. Is anyone getting vet experience right now?

I really need to get some hours in, but I assume most clinics and such do not want extra people in their offices. Additionally, I live with older parents and am trying to do everything I can to stay home as to not expose them to anything. My hope is that by the summer, this will have somewhat died down enough for me to be able to to work/volunteer somewhere.

What are all of your thoughts on this?

I don’t think there’s any sense in fretting about it right now. It’s a “no way, stay home!” for now. Essential employees only for now. Most veterinary facilities have no idea what they’ll be doing in the next few months even with their own employees. Please don’t pester them.

Maybe keep an eye out on indeed and such. But I don’t think anyone can tell you how things will play out as far as things getting back to normal.

Yes, that's what I was thinking too. Thank you 🙂

If you have the ability (space, family permission. etc), you can try volunteering to be a medical foster for a shelter or rescue organization. It's obviously not the same as being in a vet clinic but chances are you will get to talk to the vet some, and you will get to see a small set of medical conditions up close and personal.

I did this before vet school and fostered animals with various problems. Animals I took care of had: ringworm, heartworm, Lyme Disease, juvenile cellulitis, upper respiratory infections, brain tumor, infectious stomatitis, diabetes, behavioral disorders, and so, so many intestinal parasites. Probably some other stuff I'm forgetting too.

Most likely these will only count as animal hours and not vet hours, but it is something you can do from home during quarantine. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

I asked this question in a different thread called "Internships and COVID-19". Some people had some really good input in there, so if you are wondering what to do you should check it out. I'm reapplying a second cycle, so I was wondering if anybody had suggests if I felt experience needed the most improvement. Most people agree: we'll have to wait til this situation calms down to get experience, but you can always find other stuff to buff up your app.

Oops, I didn't see that before. My bad. Thanks so much 🙂 Have you thought of any other things to buff up your app (that are obviously safe and can be completed while being socially distant?

I own a small animal vet clinic. Right now we're not accepting volunteers and the volunteers we already had have been told to not come in for the moment until we know what's happening. We don't need unnecessary bodies in our clinic right now. We're trying to limit the spread of disease and we're working with fewer than normal techs so there isn't always going to be someone that can kind of supervise a volunteer. Just check back in a few months.

Seconding Minnerbelle’s suggestion. Definitely sign up for those indeed emails with a search term of your interest. I’m still getting emails with one or two hospitals looking for veterinary assistants every week. Of course, this is only if you are not living with anyone immunocompromised and you are willing to work as an essential employee 🙂 .
