So i'm graduating in December and hopefully starting dental school in August...depending on how this cycle goes! I was wondering, what do people do in their gap semesters? Honestly as bad as this sounds I just want to spend time with family, pick up some hobbies, and netflix lol. But should I also work part time or research/volunteer?

Right now during my gap year, I got a job as a DA and also got my x-ray license so I'm learning a lot. I highly recommend something like this cause I really appreciate everyone in the office teaching me things that I'll be learning in DS. Plus, I still have fun at night going out or having Netflix and chill days 🙂

I really wanted something like this but I doubt someone will hire me only for 6 months (I still have to get the certifications and everything and I know it can be a process🙁) and I've asked a few offices but they require someone with 2+ years of experience :meh:

Ahh yeah, that's unfortunate =\ I guess any part time job would be great then. Just start saving that money for DS haha

I'm graduating in Dec. too! I plan to continue to work at a dental office part-time, and then travel a bit before dental school. I have a few friends who did gap semesters last year and a lot of them got jobs nannying! Thats def a job that wouldn't mind hiring you short-term.

If you don't get in the first round of acceptances i would look into research and things for next semester.
Other than that enjoy your time off! Spend time with your family and do what you enjoy.

I graduated in August 2014 (3.5 years or whatever), I worked fulltime in a microbiology lab. Took off a month before school, went camping for a week, hung out with friends a bunch, and went fishing a bunch. I'd suggest something similar, I didn't regret it. Heck if it weren't for me trying to pay off loans I would've taken off 2 months.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! I guess i'll have to see how Dec 1st goes and see from there! 😉

I don't know that taking a semester off is going to be a negative in any way. From previous posts, most people that were accepted in past years were told by their dental schools to just chill over the summer and relax because you are in for a long 4 years. Take some time to travel or whatever. My friends and I are planning on spending a month in Europe after graduation, although we will graduate next May but still. I don't really plan on doing much the summer between undergrad and hopefully starting dental school. The only thing with having 10 months off like that is will you be busy enough to fill the hours without going bonkers!! I'd probably look for a part-time job just for something to do. Graduating in Dec you can probably get a seasonal job somewhere and usually they keep you on after Christmas if you want. I know I got contacted last summer about filling in at a dental office for a maternity leave. I couldn't actually do that because they needed someone that could work into September and I had to go back to school, but that might be an option if you keep your eyes open or put the word out.

I did it, nice at first, very bored now. Don't have the $$$ to travel every week. I would suggest getting a job or doing a study abroad. If I could do it over, I would have stayed in school (and taken easy classes ).
