Can I get some insight on those who took a gap year (or more) from undergrad and optometry school?

What did you do and was it worth it?

I'm thinking of taking a gap year just to relax and work a bit and find a fun job before diving into my permanent career. Or I was also thinking maybe extending my degree for a semester so I can do a semester abroad.

Let me know what you guys think 🙂

hey! so I did a gap year and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I worked in an optometry office, as well as traveled a lot and now I'm going back to Opt School in August. Totally normal and I would encourage it!

Do what you want to do and what's right for you and within your financial means. I personally wouldn't know what to do with all that time [ I took a half a year off after graduating from optometry school, receiving my state license, and finding my first job] and after month 1 was over I was really bored and dying to work and pay back my loans. But if you need a whole year's time-off for you, nothing wrong with that. A year is a long time though.

I'm currently taking a year off, living at home and working part time at an optometry clinic. Personally, I'm enjoying this time to relax and develop some good habits like regular exercise. I also got to take a month-long trip abroad to see family, which I couldn't have done if I was in school. you should be fine application-wise. As far as I can remember, no one asked me why I took a gap year. the drawback is financially in the long run, you lose some money since it's better to earn money sooner so you can invest it.

I took a year off before starting optometry school. Just relaxed pretty much, but try to find something academic too, anything really. I tutored on my spare time and just read some optometry journals and things like that every now and then. My school was okay with it, they just wanted you to still be academically engaged or have something educational going on. If your school doesn't need you to take any extra classes or anything i'm sure it's fine. You should ask them yourself though to be sure.
