I've been very interested in Gastroenterology for the last several years and was wondering how difficult it would be to secure a fellowship slot following residency. According to Isersons, they rank Gastroenterology as a fairly easy field to enter, but I've heard conflicting opinions. If anyone has any information it would be appreciated.

Actually GI is a very competitive fellowship, prob'ly as competitive as cardiology... In fact those are the two most competitive fellowships in Internal Medicine. If you are willing to apply to several programs and willing to relocate for fellowship, your odds of matching are much better. Also, it helps to train in an IM program that also has a GI fellowship as most programs prefer to select from within their own programs.
