Determine the value of x if 10g of CuSO4-xH2O have been dehydrated to 6.4g of anhydrous CuSO4

The answer is 5.

I understand we need to calculate the number of mols of CuSO4 (.04) in the sample and then the number of mols of H2O (.2) in the sample, but I don't know what to do next.

Do you just establish a ratio? 1/.04 = x/.2

This would solve for x, but I don't understand the reasoning behind it

10g-6.4g= 3.6g of H2O

3.6g*(1mol/18g)=1/5 mol

10-6.4=3.6 g H20

3.6g/18g=.2 moles

6.4 copper sulfate= 6.4g/(64+32+64)=0.04 moles

Take the .2 moles H2O and divide it by 0.04 and voilah you get 5 moles of h2o per mole of copper(III) sulfate.
 
Wow, that was insanely simple. I forgot I was looking for moles/copper sulfate. Thanks!
