Look at the lone pairs on nitrogen after drawing Lewis structures. NO2-: 2 electrons on nitrogen NO2 : 1 electron on nitrogen (this molecule is a radical) NO2+: 0 electrons on nitrogen The electrons on nitrogen will take up space and 'push' the oxygens closer together.
