okay.
Im sick and tired of DOs in my area (and by area I mean within 50 miles) telling me that I cant shadow bc of HIPPA, etc. etc. Im over it. Im going to apply to DO schools and reap the consequences...
anyways. I have one more option. I know this DO that is doing a surgical fellowship... hes never practiced and hes so busy doing rounds that I could realistically only interview him. But, he might write me a lor. Is this sufficient in the eyes of DO ADCOMs? Would it even make a difference?
thx.

The HIPAA thing is just an excuse. I have heard it before too. They don't want a student to shadow them whatever the reason. You just have to keep trying.
If you can get a DO to interview you and write a letter, then that is better than not having a DO letter with the AdComs that require the DO letter. Just a suggestion, but an interview is a good way to get your foot in the door for a possible shadowing. I did it.

Try shadowing an MD if that's easier, and getting a LOR from them. I think there are only a couple of schools out there that REQUIRE a DO letter, the majority of them PREFER a DO letter, but do not require it! I was accepted to multiple schools this year without a DO letter.

Good luck!

HIPAA is more than excuse, b/c you may see patient info while shadowing. You may try going through a hospital and signing up as a volunteer. They will make you go through an orientation, usually half a day, that will make you HIPAA compliant. That's what my nutrition volunteers do.

Volunteer in the ER at a hospital that has a D.O. and get to know him. They can't use excuses, because you are a hospital volunteer. This is what I did.

You don't have to "shadow" at a doctor's office to get a letter. Just volunteer.

🙄 I have worked in a hospital for the last 4 years, before that I was an insurance agent for 4 years. That's 8 years of HIPAA experience and extensive training beyond what most other health care providers get; starting before the most recent changes, which are what they are using as an excuse. Trust me, the HIPAA thing is an excuse, exactly for the reasons you state.

Hey, pm me and let me know what area you live in. If you live close to me, I know a DO that will be willing to help. He loves to get shadowed.

good luck

I ran into this same problem, and I went to my interviewing having never shadowed a DO. Luckily, they could tell that I was serious about osteopathic medicine and I was accepted and plan on attending MSUCOM in the fall. So, don’t let it stress you out too much.

dood... seriously, you are trying WAY too hard. just call up the state AOA association and ask if there are any DOs that would let you shadow them. the DOs actually tell the AOA that they are willing ahead of time, and the AOA just matches you up.

we are always hearing about how horried the AOA is, but my experience thus far has been fantastic. i call them on a thursday, and by monday i was set up to do some shadowing with a great DO, who was even very close to the school in a number of ways. could not have been better. 👍
