Currently, I'm a sophomore majoring in Biology at Ohio State University. Since I received AP credit (5) on my bio exam, my advisor told me that I can just take the lecture portion of general biology, so going with his advise i ended up taking ONLY the lecture but not the lab for two quartersduring freshman year (I did take lab for 1 quarter ). Now I understand that I must supplement classes for labs for the AP credit I received, which I don't think will be too hard as i'll be taking upper level bio courses this year - genetics, cell, ecology (required for my major), and A&P and all happen to have labs - this way i'll receive my 1 year of biology lab requirement.

My question is: Will medical schools look at it the wrong/negative way when they see my transcript - taking only gen. bio lecture but not taking the lab the other two quarters? My transcript has 'Advanced Standing' as a reference for those two labs though. Or is it safer to retake those gen. bio labs over the summer?

Well, to put things into perspective, this is what UC Davis' admission website says:

"

  • English: 1 year (Courses in Comparative Literature and/or Classics will fulfill the English requirement.)
  • Biological Sciences, lower division (with lab): 1 year
  • Biological Sciences, upper division (lab not required): 1/2 year*
  • General Chemistry (with lab): 1 year
  • Organic Chemistry (with lab): 1 year
(If two or more undergraduate courses are offered, the more rigorous option is recommended)
  • Physics (with lab): 1 year
  • Mathematics (college-level math): 1 year
(College-level statistics fulfills a portion of the requirement.)
AP/CLEP credit is not acceptable for prerequisite courses. On-line, electronic, distance learning or correspondence courses will not be accepted."

But then again, some schools don't even have a lower division lab for their bio lectures, so I don't know how strict this policy is.

I remember that UCDavis and UHSUS were two that didn't accept AP credit when I applied in 2005. However, the vast majority of schools do. They have to - I would imagine that almost all pre-meds have multiple AP classes and use them to place into bigger and better things in college.

I'm guessing most schools will require higher level bio classes to supplement?
