I'd like to hear some pros/cons from people who have taken this course (or a similar one) from these 2 schools. I am not looking for the easiest way out here - I want to learn this well and work hard to score well. I am backwards in the game in that I have already completed Gen Chem 1, O Chem 1 and 2, and Biochem 1. Those classes were not easy for me but I worked very hard to get As or Bs. A few things I have noted:

OSU - 5 credits, ~$1500, established 16 week semester schedule, uses Mastering Chemistry for online homework submission

UNE - 4 credits, ~1500, flexible 16 week semester schedule, open book/notes for quizzes and exams

Thanks!

DO schools are more forgiving of online courses than MD. Some transcripts with reg universities don't specify one way or the other so if they don't ask you don't have to volunteer. Sometimes it's obvious, but not always if you stay at one school.

My school used mastering chem for homework and counted it as a test grade. it was a HUGE pain in entering things perfectly but if you kept up nightly it was an easy A.

Do you know if Chemistry 2 through OSU has a lab component?

I took online O-Chem 2 through OSU and thought it was excellent and I learned a ton. If I remember correctly, the transcript also gives no indication that it is an online course. Of course, I was honest about the fact that it was online, and people are right that the schools don't tend to look on it too well. I suspect that in my case it was forgiven because it was essentially a retake, not because I received a poor grade the first time (I did not), but because I had been out of school for a very long time and wanted to show that I could handle the material again. I also live in the PNW, so people here can judge the quality of the courses at OSU. There was not a lab component; I took that separately somewhere closer to home.

Thanks for the replies. Since I have done well in all the other chemistry classes the school I am applying to said it was fine to take it online. I appreciate the OSU feedback. I am swaying towards that school. Good luck to all!

On the AMCAS application, you have to specify whether the course was in classroom or online... FYI; you can't not volunteer that information 😉
