HI all, I'd prefer pre-med/or med students who have already taken Gen Chem 2 to answer this question. I got a "C" in gen chem 1. I scored very well on the first two tests, then scored a "C" on the last two tests. Mind you, in addition, I was taking Bio 1 and Physics (received an "A" in...I LOVE math! lol) so I did not give chem 1 my all, sadly, as I was too involved in volunteering and traveling. However, now I am practicing for chem 1 in the areas I was weak in. I am taking gen chem 2 this fall and have a couple of questions. 1) How many hours a day would you suggest studying for it in order to understand the material well enough to receive an "A"? Also, I know practice makes perfect, but where can these practice questions be found in addition to the text book? Furthermore, I plan to ask my professor for help if I am lacking understanding in a particular topic, do professors get irritated with this? I know for Chem 1 I tried to talk to the professor but these same two girls would bomboard the professor EVERYDAY after class and talk to him for 30 mins or more. smh. And my strict schedule would not allow me to schedule another time with him. Anywho, I will definitely read the material before class, take GOOD notes, study 2 hours right after class, but outside of that I don't know what else I should do. Thanks guys!

The level of effort that you will need to put in depends upon your aptitude for the subject matter. You will have to figure that out as you go. Fortunately, you already seem to understand that practice makes perfect. Aside from attending every class and taking good notes, the key to doing well in gen chem (IMO) is to do as many practice problems as you can find. If you've exhausted the set of problems in your book and feel that you need more, search around on the web (plenty of professors from different unis post exams and homework sets, often with solutions) or check out another gen chem book from your school's library.

Also, if you have questions for the professor but cannot attend office hours, e-mail him (or her) instead. Your TAs should also be available to help you. In addition, many schools run free tutoring services for subjects like chem, math, and physics. See if your school does this, and arrange to attend those sessions if you need help. You can also consider hiring a private tutor if you have the money to do so.

Good luck!

Well Chem II is evil so I would say study as much as possible and thats about it.

Do you have TAs? I sucked at gen chem 2 but whenever I went to TA sessions they were a great help. I would say studying for an hour a day when there are no exams should be more than enough unless you aren't understanding the material. If you don't just study the night after lecture until you do.

Just study regularly. Don't try and cram stuff in your head right before exams.

THIS. I've tutored at an on-campus drop-in tutoring center for gen chem for four years...we get this exact type of student year in, year out. MOST of these students end up doing poorly in the class.

Also remember that mastery of this content may be useful for the MCAT, so i wouldn't just brush it off just to simply get the grade.
