Do we have to be good at it?

For example:

Oxygen gas can be produced by the decomposition of all of the following substances EXCEPT
(A)
calcium oxide.
(B)
hydrogen peroxide.
(C)
mercury(II) oxide.
(D)
ozone.

Am I suppose to know what all of these look like to solve the problem?

I think you should have a pretty good handle on what all of these look like. You should also know the polyatomic ion names (sulfite, nitrite, permanganate, etc.).

What's the answer to this one btw?

The answer is A. Calcium Oxide
