Gen chem question about bond enthalpy

the question will give you the exact number of C=O
energy of C=O does not equal twice of C-O
that is wrong.

not only C=O is pi bond and sigma bond which is different from two sigma bond, calculating bond enthalpy is not multiplying single bonds in 2 to get double bond
 
Do I need to calculate every bond in each molecule? For example in CH4, I'd do (whatever C-H is) x 4?


Chad didnt but I think that was because it was CH4 + Cl2 ---> CH3Cl + HCl ....... and CH4 only broke 1 to be replaced with C-Cl

So to be safe instead of needing to see exactly what was added to where, I guess I should just multiply every single bond on both sides of the reaction?

Yea I get confused with seeing what is broken/formed sometimes...

The way I do it is, I see CH4, well you know thats 4 C-H bonds, so multiply 4 times the value for the C-H bond they give you....add that to the value of Cl-Cl.....do the same thing for the product side, add 'em up and subtract the products from the reactants.

Hope that made sense...of some sort!
