hey guys, i took a diagnostic test today from kaplan (the final) and i had a question about one of the gen chem problems i got wrong.
The question is: "Increasing the amount of liquid in a sealed container will cause the vapor pressure of the liquid to..."
Answer choices:
a) increase, regardless of the identity of the liquid
b) increase, if the liquid is sufficiently volatile
c) decrease, regardless of the identity of the liquid
d) remain the same, regardless of the identity of the liquid
e) decrease, if the liquid is sufficiently volatile
the right answer is D....and their reasoning was the vapor pressure is affected by temp, pressure, and amount of solute dissolved in the liquid. changing the amount of liquid in the container will have no effect on the vapor pressure.
I'm confused, because if it's a sealed container, and more liquid is added, won't the pressure in the container increase, thereby increasing the vapor pressure? obviously my reasoning is wrong, but don't understand why
