Which statement is false?

a. a 3d orbital can hold a maximum of 10 electrons
b. a 3p orbital has 3 spatial orientations
c. the n=3 shell can contain 18 electrons
d. a and b
e. b and c

Can anyone please explain all 3 choices in detail. the correct answer is a. Thankyou

The destroyer explanation is
The d subshell does indeed hold maximum of 10 electrons, but an orgital holds a maximum of of two electrons.
can anyone also elaborate on it plz.

Talking about one orbital.

ok i get that from the destroyer explanation. can you explain me the rest of the choices. a,b and c in detail please.

P orbital can be in x, y, z axes

the electrons in each shell ==> 2n^2 formula n====> 3

2(3^2)= 18

A) is fasle because an orbital can contain only 2 e-. A SUBSHELL (s,p,d and f) can contain 2, 6, 10 and 14 e-.
B) is true because p orbital has dumbshell shape that can be oriented in X, Y and Z plane. Look at this table "Orbitals Table" here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_orbital
C) is true because n=3 shell contains the 3s, 3p, and 3d subshells. 3s= 2e-, 3p = 6 e- and 3d = 10 e-. total is 18 e-

so to repeat what you just said
a. orbital only has 2 electrons and only 2 electrons. s subshell contains 2, p subshell contains 6, d contains 10 and f contains 14
b. the 3p orbital has 3 spatial orientation which are 3px 3py and 3pz
c. n=3 can hold 18 electrons. just looking at the noble gas in n=3 its visible that it holds 18.

Thank you so much.
