Gen surg intern on probation with talk of dismal

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations!! You did this, no one else. Keep working hard. Also, it's good to know that you can be comfortable with the idea of another field too. Medicine is versatile, and I'm a strong believer that almost anyone can find a way to be happy in many different specialties.

Given the pandemic and the chaos, it was probably hard to find another resident to replace you. Programs/Hospitals don't like to downsize and lose 150k from having one less resident. Not saying your work ethic was not a factor. Just be careful, your still under the radar and you still have 4 more years of surgery residency for them to change their decision. Good luck.

Who peed on your cheerios? But I guess you might have to rationalize it this way since when the thread was first going you claimed quite definitively that there was "no chance" the OP would be retained.

It could also be that the OP's efforts to improve were the primary reason for retention. COVID or not, gen surg spots are not hard to fill. I doubt the program would have kept someone they had "on the radar" purely because it was expedient.

Given that from the beginning of this thread the OP seemed fairly realistic and reflective about their issues, I find it very possible that they improved and earned their spot. Let them enjoy the moment, and let it be an example for people who come to post similar stories.

Yeah, when I read that post, I thought the same thing.

On a related note, interesting to revisit old threads and see which posters have had their memberships permanently revoked since last year. Three in this thread alone, including one that must have been very recent (Piebaldi).

I suspect that one is just a post hold
