🙂 Has anyone ever taken GChem and Ochem in the same semester? That is 10 science units at my school.

I am in a bind because the schools in my area only offer Ochem 1 in the fall semesters and and OChem 2 in the spring semesters. The problem is that I was planning on spacing out my chemistry classes to one per semester, but I still need to take GChem 2 this fall, but the school doen't offer Ochem 1 in the spring. I can take GChem2 and OCHem1 this fall together, but the thought makes me ill.
Any suggestions or experiences on this matter?

Thanks,
Smiles 🙂

I think you should be ok taking gen chem 2 and ochem 1 at the same time. They are some of the most challenging pre-reqs, but really, it should be no harder than taking ochem 1 and calculus, or ochem 1 and physics.

Yeah, that'll be fine. I actually thought Gen Chem 2 was much more difficult than O Chem I, but I'm an O Chem kind of gal. 😛 I don't think you'll have a problem with those together. Just make sure you study well for both.

The only problem that I could see is that Gchem is a pre-req of Ochem, but if you talk to the professor and explain the circumstances they might let you get away with it. I know that at USF they dropped people from Ochem that were dual-enrolled for both classes. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I think I will be able to do it. I study a lot and was concerned only because the Chemistry Department heads "Strongly discouraged" me from doing so. They can be taken together at my school so that won't be a problem.

Did you all need and use General Chem 2 material in the Ochem class? My Gen Chem 1 class didn't cover kinetics and we just touched on equalibrium. I did well though in my previous Chem classes so I think I will be able to do it. They will be on the same day though so I guess I will just pack some extra Motrin!🙂

GenChem2 and OChem1 are totally unrelated, in my opinion. GenChem2 is all about doing calculations, calculate PH, buffer, Delta H, Delta G, equilibrium, redox, electrolysis, and then some memorization about elements in periodic table.
Ochem1 will have slightly related topics to GenChem in the first two/three chapters. Then it's all completely memorization of reactions.
The thought of it kinda makes me ill too, but if you are serious about it, I think you'll do fine. If you can, take some easy classes like microecon, sociology, speech to balance your workload.

I thought it would be the best if you can take GChem 2 in the summer, and space out OChem 1 and 2 for the Fall and Spring. I know that most of the school will offer GChem 2 or OChem 2 in the summer. I am the GChem kind, so I did have a difficult time with my OChem, and yes, GChem 2 and OChem 1 is totally not related.

GChem is a joke...So you wouldn't have to worry. GChem 2 is really fun with qualitative analysis...I enjoyed it very much. I believe OChem is harder in a way that you have to know the concepts and mechanisms of the reactions...

As of gen.chem, if you have a strong background in math and physics, it will be a breeze! Trust me.

You all have made me feel a little more comfortable with your contributions and experience. I wish I could take GChem 2 in the summer, but it is 5 days a week and the hours wouldn't work for me. If I can rearrange my schedule then I agree that would be best.🙂

Took them both and it was no problem. The only thing from Gen II that you will probably use is acid/base but even that is only very lightly touched on.

I actually have a related question regarding Ochem. If I take Ochem 1 in the fall 04 and take Ochem 2 in the Spring of 05, then apply in fall of 05 for the fall 06 admission, (Everyone following me🙂 ) Would the first Ochem class be outdated? What if I reapply the following year?
My concern is taking my Ochems too soon, if I don't get into a school the first time a apply then they might want a more recent Ochem class. Should I then wait to take Ochem next year? The con with that is that I wouldn't have a completed OChem class for my interview (I would be in progress), Does that matter.
Thanks again.🙂

I am not sure why your first OChem would be outdated. Its not like you are gonna wait 7 years before you apply. Besides, OChem II will reinfornce many of the concepts you learn in O Chem I.

Although many people have already replied..I quite agree that you can take Gen Chem and O Chem together. I found Gen. Chem II to be much easier than Gen Chem I and I absolutely loved O Chem..

best wishes.

I heard that some schools want people to have taken Ochem within 2 years of admission, otherwise they have to take a refresher course (whatever that is!)🙂

not sure how that policy would would work since some kids could take Orgo as early as Freshman (if they placed out of gen chem) and definitely as a soph. That would make it hard on the kids that continued on to get a BS before enrolling for Pharm school.

I agree with everyone else that Gen II and Orgo I really have little in common. You should be just fine. Let me say that I'm glad I'm done taking all the chemistry that I'll ever have to take. Haven't had a chem class in 6 years and that suits me just fine 🙂

I have a friend that took chem and orgo in the same semester and he did fine. Though make sure to ask the teachers if its ok and maybe speak to your advisor to make sure you arent de registered or anything. Otherwise good luck 🙂

I did General 2 and Orgo 1 at the same time. It wasn't too bad because they are not really related to each other. I would not wait a year to take Orgo 2. You will forget things you need to have memorized for orgo 2. Just take it following orgo 1 and you will save yourself a lot of headaches

Hi South 🙂

I wasn't going to take Ochem 1 and wait a year to take Ochem 2 , but rather take gen Chem 2 this fall and then wait a year to take Ochem 1 in the fall of 2005 and Ochem 2 in the spring 06, but in that case I would not have ANY OChem classes completed when I apply to some 3 year pharmacy schools next fall. I guess the only answer is to take Ochem 1 and Gen Chem 2 together. I am researching the professors to make sure that they are "fair and balanced" if you know what I mean!
