I just finished my NY GPR and now looking into different policies for Malpractice and Disability. Does anyone have recommendations on which policies are best? 😕 Some people recommend dental only carriers vs Medical Protective which insures MDs too. Should I get a claims made or occurrence policy? How much difference in $$$ is it between the two?

Any recommendations would be appreciated so I can get this outta the way before starting my job. 👍

I have MedPro for my malpractice carrier. Had them through my residency for working interviews and they were good. So now I have them for work. I chose occurence for my type of malpractice. Mine set me back $320 for full time vs. $75 for claims made. Only problem with claims made is that you either need to purchase a tail or a previous acts from another company. They can cost whatever the company wants them to (thousands of dollars if they feel so inclined). Occurence prevents that.

I only have the ADA disability insurance right now. I have Crohn's Disease and no one wants to insure me right now. 🙁

I have MassMutual for my DI.

I have $5000/month benefit until age 65 with all the bells and whistles (riders: own occupation, partial disability, cost of living adjustment, future insurability) and pay about $150/month.

Don't have malpractice yet as I'm in residency.

For your MedPro malpractice, which year are you at right now? How much was it for the first year and how much did it increase for the subsequent years?

I want to get an idea how much each company costs before settling down on one policy. I was considering MedPro but I read online that since they insure MDs too, there DDS/DMD policies were more $$$?? 😕

One more question, if I get an occurence policy from the start and decide to change to a different occurence policy with a different company in the future, I still don't need to buy a tail correct?

Regarding the disability insurance – there are a number of carriers offering high quality coverage right now: Mass Mutual, Guardian, Principal, The Standard, Union Central.

Start by doing research online, and when you are ready to move forward, find an agent that truly understands disability insurance. If you have a number of questions that he/she cannot answer, you probably want to find someone new.
A number of dental schools participate in student/resident discount programs with some of the private carriers, but it doesn’t seem like that will be helpful any longer.
