I have recently been placed on the alternate list at my state dental school. They would not tell me what my number was but said i was "high" on the list. I know i must be stupid, but what does that mean. Is it good or a bad position. Do they take people first that are high or low. To myself it could also mean you are a high number so i'm confused.

pumpkins:

Being on alternate list is much better than getting rejected for sure. Being "high" on the alternate list is much better than being "low." Most schools who have deposits down for each seat, in other words when they become full. Start making an alternate list, which means that they will rank the other students and put them in order. So you being high on the list means that if enough people fail to register for the 2003 matriculating class then you will be able to take their spot. However, the sad thing is that there is no time frame. It maybe next week, or it maybe the day before school starts.

What I would do it ask the Admission director how many people usually get off the alternate list, and that way you will know. However, you not knowing what number you are will give you a mixed feeling. If you are high that means that you have a good shot.

Cross your fingers.

no problem. I'll pray for ya. Good luck and I hope everything works out. In the mean time make a back up plan.

pumpkin,

you are in OH, do you apply to Case at all? If you are on alternate list this early at Case, you still have a very good chance. Almost 99% chance.

Tinkerbell,
I was put on hold at Case, but i was referring to OSU. Case sent me a letter saying i am on hold which is not considered a waitlist. They said they haven't taken someone off of hold in 4 years and if i get into another school i should take their offer. Man are they harsh or what!

Desi,
I totally agree with having a backup plan for those on waitlists. Luckily i have already been accepted to another school but i am waiting for osu because of it being my state school.

Thanks again for the reply!
