Hey guys,

I have a few general questions about DO schools...

First, I would love to get into NYCOM (the deadline for application is Feb 1), but I wanted to generally know about what time should I take my MCATS and whats the latest possible date?

Also, do DO schools particulary NYCOM have early decision or action? when would the deadline be if there is?

Last, for the science GPA do I include all of the science classes I have taken or just the science ones that are required?

Thanks

I am sure others will have more appropriate answers, but here is a start:

1. Most DO schools have rolling admissions. You will have different opinions on SDN, but in general it is believed that the earlier your application is put in, the better chances you have for an interview. It takes several weeks to get your MCAT score, send it to AACOMAS, then have it be processed to the schools. I would recommend not taking an MCAT later than September, but I feel this is late, depending on how strong the rest of your application is.

2. Several schools have early decision, but if you have not taken the MCAT or begun to learn the AACOMAS process, I doubt you will be in before the deadline for that.

3. Include all of your science classes, not just the pre-reqs

Good luck, and hopefully someone can jump in with specific info about NYCOM

I just want to echo what was said about applying early... just because you beat a school's application deadline doesn't mean they haven't already filled 75% of their seats by then. Waiting to get your application in until early next year would be putting yourself at a huge disadvantage.

That said... prep for the MCAT and take it as soon as you feel 100% ready. But when you do, make sure you hit the ground rolling with your applications b/c if you are doing it in fall you'll have a lot of people in ahead of you and you wont want to waste any time.

I'm a junior currently and graduating in spring of 2009 and decided to become pre-med mid way through college. I have most of the pre-req's done but I won't be finished completely until the fall of my senior year. Is this to late if I am hoping to apply for the fall 2009 year?

Ah. I was under the impression you were applying for the Fall of 2008 app cycle.

In this case, you can afford to take the MCAT later as long as it's not the same year you're applying.

It looks like you have plenty of time and should be fine for the 2009 cycle. Just make sure you have the MCAT pre-reqs taken care of by the time you take the test and have your scores in by the time you apply.

HAHA, you are wayyy ahead of the game...well, how about on the right track? Take your time studying for the MCA (as said above). If you are not ready, do not waste your time or money, and push back the test. I would check at NYCOM's website, and maybe call the admissions office for more info on their early decision program. It is my understanding that these programs are generally for very well qualified students who only want to go to this school. If you are accepted you are required to withdraw all other applications. You are on the ball for next year. Good luck.

Oh, and don't take the MCAT without having O.Chem and Physics, etc - you will need these to do your best. Good luck
