I will be starting med school in the fall and I am wondering what kinds of things you guys cover in genetics. I am taking genetics right now as a requirement for my major and I am pulling my hair out as I learn about drosophila, yeast and a multitude of other things I really don't give a crap about....is the experience any different in med school?

Yes it's much different, in that everything is human/disease based. Other coursework in medical school compares the same way to undergrad sciences.

we had one test that covered genetics. It was essentially all cytogenetics, with a little on cancer, a lot on aneuploidy, and a little on epigenetics, with some visualization techniques and stuff.

The biochemistry of DNA is much more important.

And, as I'm sure you have guessed, it is nothing like your drosophila lectures.

Diseases/mutations, inheritance patterns, and cell cycle regulation/tumorgenesis stuff.

med genetics isn't harder than undergrad genetics.
I agree with this. In many respects, its actually quite easier. Clinical applications and information in genetics is much more simple than explaining the biochemistry behind genetic diseases.

The curriculum will evolve to include more about gene testing and the ethics involved in human genetics. It's a fascinating area that is changing rapidly and drawing more people.

Our genetics class went into a lot of detail, and some would say it was harder than our Gross Anatomy class...but compared to an upper-level genetics class, it's not as bad. I'm sure it will mainly consist of interpreting pedigrees, gels, and reading vignettes to identify genetic diseases(that is how our exams were).

did you have more than one exam on genetics? I don't think genetics is very important for the step- wouldn't see why they'd make it so hard.
