In the solutions, they are assuming that the 75% of the phenotypically normal children are from carrier parents and made a punnett chart to show that out of the 3/4 phenotypically normal children, 1/3 is homozygous normal and 2/3 are heterozygous normal. I wasn't clear about the carrier parents assumption when I read this question and even though this question is accompanied by a passage, it seemed like a stand alone question without reference to the passage.

This is how I tried to approach this question:

phenotypically normal children = p^2 + 2pq = 0.75
So, q^2 = 0.25
q = 0.5
then p = 0.5

genotypically normal homozygous = p^2 = 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.25 = 25%

Can someone tell me what is wrong with my approach/method?

I keep missing questions like this because of problems with interpretation of the question. Any tips in general for this?
