General opinions of these programs?

Do they have good fellowship placements for graduating residents (REI specifically)?

Thank you!

I'm not quite certain about GW, but do know that Georgetown is placing one into GYN-ONC this year, and within the last few years placed one into REI and another into ONC. Hope this helps ya! Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. Congratulations on MFM! What would you say about fellowship placement at your home institution? APGO says that over the last 5 years, Washington Hospital Center has placed 90% of its graduates into private practice and 3% into fellowships. Does this seem accurate?

Thank you! 🙂

We have notoriously been the high volume, hands on program here in DC compared to the other two. In the past, under the old chairman, the program was geared toward general OB/GYN and only one person tried and successfully matched into fellowship. To my knowledge, my class is the first in the line of many to come that has fellowship aspirations and this is in part due to the current chairman's emphasis on research and move toward academics.

We had two people from my class go for fellowship and I was the one who made it. Next year's class has one interested in UroGyn,one MFM, and the other in Breast fellowships, and the classes thereafter have several residents geared toward MFM.

I think this also speaks to the new paradigm in OB/GYN with alot more people considering subspecialty training.

Have a gd nite!🙂

Sounds like a great program! I'm from the D.C. area and we are looking to possibly relocate there for residency, so thank you for sharing your experiences. Would you recommend your program? What do you consider strengths/weaknesses of the program?

Thanks again! 🙂

I whole-heartedly would recommend us! Before I get to the pros and cons, let me tell you that now-a-days you'll get great training at any of the programs in the region... the bigger issue is what is the best "fit" for you. As I tell our applicants, each program has its unique features and personalities, and you just have to figure out where you can see yourself being happy for the next 4 years.

As for us,
Strengths: We are for the most part at WHC for everything. We do rotate at Walter Reed/Bethesda/NIH for REI, Children's National Medical Center (next door to us) for adolescent gynecology, and spend two months at Holy Cross & Kensingtom Sugery Center in 2nd and 3rd year for pure GYN surgery with the Kaiser Staff. We have a large volume of OB (4700 deliveries), GYN (Staff Clinic, Unity Staff Clinics, Private, and Kaiser patients), Gyn/Onc, and UroGyn (3 staff), adolescent patients, and pride ourselves on our operative skills when we graduate.
Weaknesses: The volume does seem intimidating at first and initial 6 months are rough as you learn the pace and get going. Also, with the programs move towards academics and rapidly growing volume, there alot of constant changes (renovations, etc.). Lastly, there is a big emphasis on research and some people don't like that, but its a mandatory requirement and like it or not, you have to produce before graduation...

Let me know if you have any other questions... As for the other two programs, they'll get you great training as well. Georgetown (sister program) gets majority of their numbers at Virginia Hosp Ctr and us, with some time spent at Georgetown itself for Onc, MFM, and GYN. Its definitely a slower pace program with a wonderful group of residents. GW gets their numbers at INOVA Fairfax & Holy Cross in most part and the rest is at their home institution. I have had the pleasure of working with several of their grads as well as dealt with their residents when one of their patients ended up with us and all of the experiences have been positive.

Good luck with the searching process... lord knows I'm glad its behind me!😀

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information!

I dare say that I will have questions for you in the near future... I appreciate your help! Congrats on finishing your residency soon; I can only imagine how wonderful that must feel.

I could be wrong, but I think I know the resident posting this information about the Washington Hospital Center =) I agree with everything said.

As a 4th year student applying, I can honestly say that it is the BEST OBGYN program in DC. Excellent faculty, great residents, very strong MFM, and nice facilities. This is an up and coming program that is better than many of the University programs I have interviewed at so far.... a hidden gem =)

and to Global Disrobal, I heard where you matched from "Mr. Neonatology". Congrats again =) You will love it there... unfortunately I was not able to get an interview at that institution =( I spit in their general direction 😉

Thanks for the kind comments boss! 😀

Sorry to hear you didn't get an invite there, but hell from what I remember from our conversation, you've got some killer choices coming up...

Hit me up when you're around so that we can drag you into the O.R. and show you some fun!

Happy Holidays!
