This is a program I am strongly interested in pursuing. I just want to get a general sense of what my application should look like. So, please list the following (or as much of it you can or feel comfortable giving):

1. Undergrad school & any grad schools attended before going to the SMP

2. Cumulative GPA

3. BCMP (GPA Sciences)

4. MCAT

5. Any research/work/volunteer/ etc experiences

6. Anything else that you think will help or has helped you get in.

well, for this year's class, the average stats are 29MCAT and about 3.3 GPA. To have a decent chance of getting into GU SMP you should have at least a 3.0 and a 27MCAT. those aren't written-in-stone standards, but those are realistic minimums you should shoot for. i'm not really sure if ECs are considered as part of the admissions process, but i'm guessing they are since the coordinators try to pick people who they believe will be successful candidates for med school. also, if you're going to be applying to med school while in the smp program or shortly after, you're going to need to have some significant medical experience and extra-curriculars anyway. hopefully that helps. there have been several threads recently about georgetown's smp and recently admitted candidates have posted their stats on a couple of those threads, i believe. do a search and i'm sure you'll be able to find something useful. as for undergrad school, i don't think that matters at all. we have people in our class from prestigious top-ranked schools as well as schools i've never heard of before. don't worry about that.

one more thing - if you're planning on applying for this incoming class, apply NOW. the sooner you apply, the better. unfortunately, it seems like some qualified people are turned down each year because there were simply no spots left in the class. best of luck.

I posted this on the MD forum before I knew you had started this thread again here:

1. Got my BS in Molec and Cell Bio from U of Arizona, did a year of Post-Bac at Cal State San Berdu

2. well, according to AMCAS, it is 2.95

3. Dunno, never calculated it precisely, but probably just slightly lower (2.9 range, maybe?)

4. 36R, 10P, 14V, 12B

5. Honestly, too many to list. Currently working as a lab tech at Loma Linda U.

6. Persistence, persistence, persistence. The key to the SMPs are, they are looking for students who have the ability to be doctors, but for whatever reason (I had a little too much fun in college) don't have the stats. If you can demonstrate that you have the capability to be a doc (in my case, the MCAT, and my post-bac GPA - 3.93) they will admit you.

Key thing is, though, if you are thinking about attending this year, you need to get your app in yesterday. They take people on a rolling basis, and you are nearing the end of the application process...

I found out about this program this past summer and I am currently a junior, so I might be applying for, not the entering class of '05, but the entering class of '06.

I scored a 33 on the MCAT (13P, 10V, 10B)...

From what I've been reading, they only accept people with a sub-3.0 gpa into the program if the MCAT offsets it. Is this score high enough to get me in with a 2.9x gpa? I have great extracurriculars, and I showed extreme academic improvement over time (i made a .5 jump in one academic year...straight a's accross the board). I'm just worried that I won't get in because it sounds like everyone being accepted has 3.2+ gpa and the ones who had a sub-3.0 got huge mcat scores (35+). Is the 33 going to save me or am I a few points too low for that consideration? Any advice would be great...

My guess would be that the MCAT will save you; however, to get in med school you will need to do great in the smp.

Palm, there is a yahoo discussion board where you can post this question directly to Dr. Myers (the director of the program) who can let you know how competitive you will be.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/physios

check that out and post your question there. Dr. Myers usually gets back to people within a day or two.

I just recently visited G'town for the SMP Open House and was accepted Wednesday. From what I understood from the faculty, it's more and more difficult to get in if you have a cum. GPA below a 3.0... The SMP is under the umbrella of the graduate school which has a pretty strictly adhered to minimum of 3.0. Apparently they've made exceptions for students in the past and gotten burned for it so the new dean is pretty strict about it. However, if you're borderline and can explain any extenuating circumsatcnes that have since been resolved, they do consider that. Palm, it seems like you you'd have a decent chance for the SMP with a 33 because your gpa is right on the border. I'd definitely keep my hopes up and apply if you haven't already. SOON!

FYI:
B.S. in Neuroscience, University of Florida- English Minor
cum gpa: 3.34
science: 2.9
MCAT: V-12, 10, 10
two years of full time lab work, one publication, two pending, quite a bit of volunteer experience and a kickass personal statement.

Hope that helps,

Nikki

Hey Nikki,

When did you apply? I applied March 1, but I haven't heard anything yet. I was at the openhouse too, but Ms. Cabiness said they hadn't reviewed my application yet.

I applied pretty early on...February 1st I think all of my materials were in but they hadn't actually processed it until the end of February. While at the Open House my application was sitting on Ms. Moses' desk waiting to be sent to Dr. Myers and Dr. Mulroney. I guess they could tell I was anxious and got back to me pretty quickly. Good luck, I'm sure you'll hear soon.

Yeah, you did apply quite early. Congrats on your acceptance. I'm surprised they took as long as they did to get back to you. I received an e-mail from Ms. Cabiness a little over four weeks ago saying that they should make a decision within three to four weeks, so I should be hearing anytime now. However, when I was at the openhouse, she said that none of the directors had looked at it yet, so I suppose it could still be another week or so.

It's kinda strange just how similar my numbers are to yours. :) Hope I'll get into the SMP (should hear any day now). Did you get in right away, or did they waitlist you first?

I think its strange people are applying so late ... I mean .. classes START August 14th! Like, people are asking their spots to be left open 1 month or 2 months before the program even starts, and there are 600+ applicants for 120 spots

Is the reason 1) waitlists didnt cause matriculation or 2) you just heard about the program, cuz I sent in my application in January even though I was still hearing back from schools. I played it safe. Obviously that option wasnt avaiable to many, but I'm still wondering why people are waiting till May!

Its so weird people are sitting on the application, its asking to get into a special program Last-Minute!

Your thoughts?

Actually, I heard it's about 800 applications for 159 spots. I didn't apply early than the beginning of March because I didn't know about the program. Maybe other people figure that if they are on waitlists, then must be a reasonably qualified applicant already, and so they should have no problem getting into the SMP.

I just received my acceptance to the program today after applying in March. That was really fast since I was only notified a week ago that all my materials had been submitted. I applied after my last med school chance fall through in early March.
Stats:
B.A. Mathematics
3.31 Cumulative GPA
3.50 BCPM GPA
32 MCAT 11P 10V 11B
18 months as an ambulance medic, currently a clinical research assistant

Oh, and I am going to accept their offer and look forward to returning home to the D.C. area. On top of that I found $50 wadded up in my drawer today. It's been an awesome day. :)

wow, that's a pretty solid application to begin with. as long as you perform decently in smp, i bet you'll do very well for yourself in the application cycle next year. best of luck.

Hi Folks,
I am a current SMP student too, so I figured I might as well throw in my two cents...
One thing to definetly consider: if you are applying to medical school next year and are certain that you are going to do the SMP... be sure to get your AMCAS application as SOON as you can... because if you can get the bulk of your secondaries out of the way during the summer, the better off you'll be! A number of the secondaries have essays that tend to overlap other schools' so working hard on the 'tough' ones when you have time will be to your benefit!
Good Luck,
Max

Max that's a good point but... so I am a 4th year, 1st time med school applicant this June, who has applied to the SMP last month. I intend to apply the 1st week of June but when do secondaries come rolling in? Can they ALL be done online? If not ALL, how many can be done online? I will be away/abroad for the month for June and wont be in the US until July, will that be enough to receive and send out secondaries? It's tough to judge when doing the secondaries before the SMP because there's no way of knowing when I will get them!

I applied in the beginning of March and have yet to hear back.

Calbear-Having gone through the process once already, you should have plenty of time to complete secondaries. Once you submit your AMCAS app and depending on how long it takes to verify its contents (about a week or so if you submit early), you should start receiving secondary notifications via email within another 2-3 weeks. As for completing them online, I believe all the secondaries I filled out were available online. Maybe one or two were simply PDF files that I had to manipulate so I could type them up on my computer.

You should definitely search the forums on secondaries for particular schools you have in mind to research possible essay questions. That way you can brainstorm ideas now and be ready to complete the secondary as soon as it becomes available. Do that and all you'll really need is a solid block of time to start cranking them out.

Hope that helped. :)

Hey Tree,

I am a current physio and my stats are close to yours:

33Q (14 PS, 8 VR, Q WS, 11 BS)
AMCAS BCPM (during application to SMP) 2.96
AMCAS OVERALL (during application to SMP) 3.03
Extracurriculars: ALOT of research...3 publications when I applied to SMP
Undergraduate School: UCLA Biochemistry w/ Computer Specialization in 4 years

I really enjoyed the program and it has helped my application out tremendously. From my classmate's applications and my own, I think the SMP helps out people with lower GPAs and higher MCATs (like us!) as long as you do well in the program...I like to say 3.5+. PM me if you have any further questions!

Good luck!

I researched/worked for the following PI's:

Dr. Carlos Grijalva - Dept. of Psychology - Effects of ICV astressin injections on stress

Dr. Sherrel Howard - Dept. of Pharmacology - Potentiation of MDMA neurotoxic effects by LSD and protection by MDL 11,939

Dr. William Pardridge - Dept. of Neuroendocrinolgoy - Drug delivery through the BBB

Dr. David Heber - Dept. of Physiology - Weight loss studies of an indigent population at the VFC
- Anti-oxidant effects of green tea catechins

Dr. Pinchas Cohen - Dept. of Pediatric Endocrinology - TR3/RXR signal transduction
- Humanin as a survival factor for sperm in the testes

Dr. Theodore Moore - Dept. of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology - Quality of life study on children with brain tumors

I was a big research person and spent 4 years in a lab. You can get yourself in the research scene by simply talking to a professor you like. I approached Dr. Grijalva after the first week of class because I enjoyed his course and told him I would like to volunteer for him. He got me connected with a graduate student and I was doing SRP (student research projects aka honors 99). Then a TA in that same course told me he was doing work with ecstasy and LSD so I thought it might be cool to get involved in that. Soon I was volunteering/working in 4 labs. I was able to fly out all over the US for conferences and presenting posters and getting published. UCLA has a lot to offer. My grades were only really bad my first two years...I blame it on all the partying. :)

So I just called up the SMP today. They had previously told me that it would take 3-4 weeks but that was 5 weeks ago. They told me today that I'm basically on hold until they get more applciations becasue they want to see what other applications come in and their quality. I thought that by having my application sent in by the beginning of March, they told me the app was completed by mid-March, that would be early enough to beat the rush. Apparently not. Huge bummer!! I have a 30, overall 3.4, science gpa of 3.1.

Anyone hear anything recently, know what this means for me? I totally thought I'd get an acceptance by now, eveyone I've asked had told me that I should be a lock but apparently I'm not.

Oh, I asked and they told me about 500 people have applied and there are 135 spots left.

I guess I'm a little mistaken ... I thought there were fewer spots ...

I applied using my AMCAS essay and application, so I did not need to write anything for them. Maybe the time to process the application is dependent on which type of application is sent to Georgetown ??? I did spend a lot of time on the AMCAS application, so it was an all-around complete and very easy-to-read package.

The comparison that they are making btw applicants now is probably due to the lack of available spots (maybe it is that there are 135 acceptances out of 160 spots???) The same occurs with Med School applicants, and thats why it is better to apply early!!

Sorry for your long wait, I was contacted a week after my app was "processed" (a week after they sent me the official "your app is complete and has been processed" email). I hope you get in, with your stats, you should!

I decided against sending my AMCAS application since I felt I made a lot of mistakes in preparing it. So I compiled 4 pages of materials meeting the supplemental materials requirement and wrote a new statement of purpose specific to Georgetown. It looked much nicer than my 15 page AMCAS app did and provided a much clearer picture of who I am as an applicant.

I applied in mid January with the paper applicaiton. BIG MISTAKE. I would HIGHLY recommend that any applicants in the future apply online and submit AMCAS. I think this should significantly reduce application time. As for me, I still have not heard back. I was, however recently accepted to VCU’s SMP program, so I can wait.

Does anyone know if you can get into SMP with a DAT score instead of MCAT or GRE and future plans of getting into dental school?
Thanks.

Georgetown SMP will accept GRE scores as well? I'm just curious...

When I last inquired, I was told that the G-town SMP will accept the GRE. To be competitive, I was told scores of 650 quantitative, 650 verbal or better are desireable.

Since the program is designed to get people into medical school, and the only entrance exam asked for is either the GRE or MCAT, I assume it's not an acceptable test for admission.

You could call up the SMP coordinator, Ms. Cabiness, just to be sure.

If your future plans are to enter dental school, the directors of the SMP will tell you to look into something else. This question was posted before on the Physios Yahoo Groups Forum. I believe Dr. Myers reasons were 1) this is a really difficult and intense program (I can attest to that!) which is pretty much designed to get students into medical school, not dental school. 2) there are far better, cheaper things you can do to make yourself more competitive for dental school than the SMP. IMO, I feel that this is a very honest/valid statement by Dr. Myers. The directors always give out good advice, so trust what they say. Having almost completed the SMP (just one more month to go!), I would not recommend this, unless you are NOT JUST interested in a US allopathic medical school, but DETERMINED to matriculate. For those of you who are accepted and have any questions, feel free to ask. Good luck!

Does the 3.0 cutoff apply to both the overall and BCPM or just the overall GPA?

I think it technically refers to both. However, there are quite a few of my classmates who do have slightly lower in one or both categories. These individuals have either shown an upward trend in their GPAs or have MCAT scores to make up for their grades.

Has anyone filed for financial aid yet at gtown? I know that I need to fill out FAFSA and gtown's graduate supplemental app. What happens afterwards? I was hoping to take out a loan for the full year and then tack it on to the debt I'll acquire with medical school. Anyone else in a similar position?

You could call Ms. Cabiness, who is the secretary for the program. She is very knowledgable because she's been there since the program started 30 years ago. Her number is (202) 687-1179

However, I would strongly suggest you ask Dr. Myers (the SMP director) on his Yahoo group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/physios/ He checks it every day, and he would be able to give you the best answer.
