Georgetown SMP, Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I "waive my right to access my LOR" does that mean I am prohibited from viewing it or does that simply mean I can still view it, but the writer has to give permission since it is no longer my "right"?

if you waive your right, you'll never see it. It's pretty commonplace that some people/committees won't write a letter unless you waive your right - im surprised this is the first time this is coming up for you

I am curious if anyone on the waitlist has heard anything yet?

if you waive your right, it means your giving up your legal right to have access to your LOR. however, some professors may actually have you read over it before they send it in, or they may even have you write your own before they edit it. or, of course, they may not let you see it at all. it is totally your professor's prerogative...

thank you. Your answer is the correct answer and matches the consensus reached in the thread I made in the pre-allo forum (I asked this question in that forum). Thegoose is incorrect that I'll never see it. as quoted, it is the professor's prerogative.

Hey guys.. got into Gtown a while back, but I've been waitlisted at a few different schools during this application cycle.. does anyone know what will happen if I were to get off one of those waitlists after the term has started at Gtown? Do they give any of your tuition money back? Thanks guys ..(good luck to all those who are on the SMP waitlist hopefully I can give my spot to one of you guys 😳)

If you get accepted to a med school and choose to enroll, then you would have to withdraw from Georgetown. You would lose your $500 deposit, and only a portion of your tution would be return. The amount returned would depend on how far along in the semster we are.
For specifics, contact the Office of Student Financial Services 202-687-4547 or Cabiness.

You would definitely forfeit the deposit, but I don't even know if they would give you a portion of the tuition back (Since it's a one-time bill for the semester I'm not sure if they would pro-rate). I would wait until you know you aren't going to those med schools. We don't need to pay our bill until mid august and at that point you would have found out the story about your waitlists. (just talked to ms cabiness about this, you can also ask for a deferral of payment for 60 bucks to get more time to pay...or to hold off from paying =0)

In theory you are not supposed to be able to see them if you waive your rights but some people will show the student the letter before giving it out.

your statement is not technically correct. in theory, you are no longer allowed to exercise your right to view documents part of your academic record. it does not, however, mean you are not allowed to read the document if given appropriate permission. (it sounded like you were saying that even if the professor lets you read it, it is still not allowed since you are not supposed to see it).

This should explain the matter well:

Hey guys, I was accepted into the SMP program on friday and have a question about my MCAT expiring that maybe you guys could answer. There have been plenty of questions like this asked on SDN before, but the MCAT expiration thing seems so dang confusing with all the differences in whether its counted back from the application or matriculation year that I though I would see if you guys would have any simple insight.

I took the MCAT in January of '08. If I don't get in this cycle, will I still be able to use my score for the majority of schools in the '10-'11 cycle? If I won't be able to, it seems kind of foolish to go to G-town where I will have no time to prepare to take the test again.

yeah i think so. I took it in 2007 and this is the last year i can use the scores. 7+3 = 2010 admission

p.s. got in friday? badass.

January 2008 is good for 2011 entry at a lot of schools, but not at all of them. NYMC is a huge one for SMP students that you will be ineligible to apply to.

from nymc: (i just checked because i started freaking out)

How are multiple MCAT scores viewed?
Many applicants take the MCAT more than once. This is not considered a liability. We attach greatest importance to the most recent scores, although we review the last two sets of scores. For applicants applying for entrance in 2010, the MCAT must have been taken between January 2007 and September 2009.

If Jan 07 is good for 2010 entrance, then I would bet that Jan 08 would work for 2011 entrance, no?

So, I'm looking around at housing and was wondering if anyone had any more advice than what I've already found. I am married and have a kid, so just getting a room is not an option. I've been a little overwhelmed by most of the prices I've seen so I'm probably going to be looking at northern VA or someplace like that. Any suggestions?

looking for a house or an apt? River Place is a good apt. complex (still pricey...but that's the way it is). there's a shuttle bus that comes to georgetown campus from the rosslyn metro which is only 2 blocks from the complex. http://www.riverplacenorth.org/renting.htm

you could also look at places deeper in virginia and then take the metro to rosslyn and then the shuttle bus. It all depends what kind of commute you want to look at.

feel free to PM me

i just got off the waitlist!! does anyone need a roomate? PM me.. i have to find a place

there are still a few people looking for housing. you aren't alone in the hunt.

So how'd the first test go everyone? Did Crook catch you with some awesomely detailed questions?

HAAHA yes! He's a great lecturer, almost too good. He's so organized anything and everything is fair game. Not to mention the curve was absurdly high, but overall did alright. Nervous about the next one. They threw in an embryology curve ball of 4 lectures from Gallicano for this next one.
