Anybody hear back from Georgetown yet? I called Ms. Cabiness today and she said that they would be reviewing apps again tomorrow... Sort've worried about it. 😕

Anyways, I got into BU's program and PCOM. Still waiting for Loyola, Georgetown, UMDNJ, and Drexel. I think I need advice on where to go, I think I'd pick BU over PCOM but I'm not so sure about Loyola/Georgetown and even Drexel anymore. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

christ, you applied to a lot of postbacs. if you get into both georgetown and bu, i'd be hard pressed to see a good reason to go anywhere other than one of those two. some people cite cash as a reason to go to a smaller program, but hell, do what i'm doing and take out federal graduate plus loans. you don't need to start repayment until you're done with med school.

my personal opinion is georgetown is better, but only because that's where i'm going.

thanks a lot. yeah, i'm in BU but i'm just waiting on georgetown.

I've gotta say that many of the established programs are going to get you into med school if you can do really well. You should just go with which ever seems to fit you the best.
Aside, I have also got to say that I am not sure G'town is "better" than BU. For some it may be a better fit, but both can be done in one year, cost about the same, have the same acceptance rates to med school, and have been around for 20+ years. BU I think has some advantages to G'town though with more modern facilities, better research structure, and higher ranking by US News (28 vs 46).

Once again, just one person's opinion.
Hope to see you at BU next year.

Are you going to BU next year?

BU seems just as good as Georgetown, except that the program is intended to be finished in two years. It seems some people may be able to finish in one year, but I wonder if that would work for most people.

if you're talking about the competitive pool, i talked to her yesterday and she said they were reviewing it today too...and decisions should be sent out next week. good luck! i really want to get in here...'cause i really don't think i can afford to fork over 2 years worth of tuition before i'm even in med school. 🙂

I think you can lump Drexel, BU, and Georgetown as the same type of program. BTW, is there an MCAT cutoff for BU's program? I hear good things about it and some people ask me about it but I have no idea.

i think the mcat cutoff is flexible. someone with a 26 just got in and i personally know someone with a 27 who got in a few years back. i think they also accept GRE scores whereas georgetown def doesn't (not sure about drexel but i think they want mcat scores as well) b/c i had a MAMS friend who took the mcat when he was in the program so i think he got in with his GRE score.

i have 3 personal friends who did the MAMS in 1 yr - 1 did a straight library thesis, the other did a library thesis with some lab work and the 3rd did a lab thesis (which we joked in my lab wasn't worth what a normal masters student would be allowed to get away with to graduate but the PI understood the nature of the MAMS program and gave him a small doable project in 1 yr). he didn't get in to med school so he spent a 2nd yr in our lab while reapplying (not taking classes) even though he had already handed in his MA thesis.

also, i would guess that u wouldn't have to pay 2 full years worth of tuition. when i was a straight masters student there, after i finished taking classes, i just had to pay a continuing ed credit (sth like only 2 credits) to be considered registered full-time for that semester. i would think if u finished all ur required classes in 1 yr and didn't want to take a full load worth of credits/$$ in the 2nd yr, u could do sth similar to what us straight grad students get to do.

From what I have read about the program, you are right. After your course work is finished you just pay for the continuing ed fee/credits. Its not that expensive.
I actually liked this aspect of BU since the data for acceptance to medical school for both G'town and BU are with in one year of graduation. If you don't get in after the one year you could have the opportunity to contue research.

You are correct. I finished the courses here at BU in one year. I am paying the continuing ed fee to take two night classes next year while I work.
