i was really impressed with georgetown when i was there. I guess i expected to not like it because of religious affiliations, but i actually loved the campus, the students were pretty fun and relaxed, the facilities were nice, nothing too exciting but fine, there were lots and lots of research and service opportunities.

How bout you apply, interview, get accepted, and then bump this thread- mmk?

Thanks for your response. I am hoping to go to Georgetown but would like as much information as anyone can give me. Does anyone know how many applicants they had last year? How many acceptances have been offered?

PreMD86. I see that you interviewed there. Can you actually give me an idea of what you thought?

I interviewed there as well. i don't know about last year, but the year before they had 7,944 applicants, 1,312 interviews, 413 accepted, 190 enrolled.

they're a jesuit school but really open minded. Very devoted to their mission statement cura personalis, very service oriented.

It honestly couldn't matter any less what I thought- all that matters is what you personally think of it, and for that you need to be invited there. If you already know you want to go there, what's the point of starting this thread? Is there honestly anything any of us can tell you that would cause you to change your mind? Drop them an app and and wait until you at least get an interview.

As far as what I thought- My impression was the campus itself was among the most gorgeous I'd ever seen, but the students seemed stressed and competitive. Most attendings I've spoken to also mentioned the residency program was in serious financial problems, but could not comment on the effects that would bear on the medical education. At the end of the day, I would have gone there had I not been accepted to my state school.

how close is the med school to the undergrad campus? Do they share the same campus?

They share the same campus. Most of the undergrad courses are "across the way" from the medical school itself, but only by about 500-600 yards.

hey I went to gtown undergrad. Its a great school in a great location. Very historic and I highly recommend it. HOwever, the med school is middle of the pack and puts alot of value in volunteering and altruism.

Heh, you almost make it sound like volunteering and altruism is a bad thing! But I'm sure I'm just reading it that way after the middle of the pack comment. I was also a Georgetown undergrad, grad student, and will be a Georgetown Medical Student (Drinking the Koo-Aid i know i know...), but I do love this university. The Medical School may be called "middle of the pack" according to the rankings (I never knew 40 out of 127 was middle of the pack nowadays), but I would say that of the "middle of the pack" schools it is def. at the top. We have a great reputation with residency directors, this years matchlist matched >45% into top 25 medical centers according to US News, and the Hospital is back on its feet financially. The School of Medicine also has great affiliate hospitals including Washington Hospital Center, the largest Hospital Center in the area which sees literally everything you can think of.

As for research, our research dollars have been steadily creeping upwards and the Medical Center's new initiative on "System Medicine" and Preventative Medicine is set to separate us from the pack during this time of decreasing NIH funding. To top it off, we have a brand new integrated curriculum being instated this upcoming year that the faculty are excited about.

Personally, I think it's an exciting time to be a Med Student at Georgetown. The school does value volunteerism and service, but few would consider the school a "Primary Care" school. We send most of our students into the specialties, especially orthopedic surgery. I am happy to answer any other questions you have about the atmosphere here!

Thanks for the help and advice. I am curious about Gtown because a good friend is going there and I just wanted to see how good of a school you all think it is. Anymore comments are appreciated.

copying and pasting from school's website:

In 2007-2008, the School of Medicine received 11,236 AMCAS applications. Of the 6,887 completed applications, 1,107 individuals were interviewed to seat a class of 194 students. The Committee on Admissions strives for a diverse representation in the Class and reviews academic credentials, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, participation in health care experiences, and the interview evaluation when making its selections.

really? from the website it doesn't seem that service oriented

I keep seeing research, research, research everywhere

Only 50% of people fill out the Georgetown app? Is this normal? Why even waste your $30 if you're not going to actually apply to the place?

I guess a lot of people don't know about that 5000 character essay that you have to write on your secondary. Also, I'm sure other things happen like people do poorly on an MCAT taken after they submitted, they have issues with their LORs, they change their mind about the school, etc. There are a million reasons why people could submit their AMCAS to a school and then not complete the secondary.

Georgetown is a find med school. It gets bashed on SDN periodically, but it is is a very good school if you fit their profile.

DC is horrid. I hate it.

The Medical School? It really has experienced some huge problems lately and has struggle and I dont know if its in the top 50 for medical schools.

The Faculty is very, from my experience, research focused and dont help students much, but this is more of a campus-wide view instead of the medical school itself. I know several prof's from the medical and they are very nice and helpful...but I dont know about the whole of the medical school.

All I can say is DC is not fun...at least I haven't enjoyed it.

Good luck...I'd go and experience the surrounding areas and see what you think of it.

You actually liked your experience there?

Congratulations.

Georgetown seems to get bashed on

but GWU seems to get a lotta praise.. why is this?

Went to Georgetown and loved it. D.C. is a very cool place to be, but isn't for everyone (like NYC and other major cities; some love it, some don't).

In re: GWU, no idea. We used to make fun of them (and American University), but that's just local rivalry.

How can you not like DC? DC and NYC are the opportunity capitals of the world for whatever professional field you are entering. For DC, the prospect of being able to work with the political side of the health care system is an amazing opportunity if you ask me. Of course I want to get my MPH and work in an urban area, so maybe I'm a little biased.

George Washington has raised itself above its rankings over that last several years. The new hospital has meant a lot, especially concerning primary care. I know of at least five former Georgetown IM professors who now are at GW since the opening of the hospital.

Would anyone go to Georgetown over their state school? Is the money worth it for the location and political opportunities?

Speaking of political opportunities, does anyone know of any good internships or opportunities that Georgetown offers?

Thanks.

I chose my state school over Georgetown, even though I would MUCH rather live in DC than Baltimore. I love GU and believe that it is an excellent medical school, but I couldn't justify the costs when Maryland, in the long run, will be about 1/2-2/3 the price.

As for "political opportunities," I don't know what you're getting at, exactly. It would make sense to ask this if you were looking into the School of Foreign Service, Law School, Government, Policy, etc. - but not medicine. You'll be far too busy in medical school to complete a concurrent program, unless you take a year or 2 off to get another degree. You can be politically active and attend any med school in the country.

I guess I am curious if there are any opportunities during the summer after M1 that might be available that could integrate medicine and health policy or politics. Are there any opportunities in DC with the AMA or any think tanks specifically for medical students?

i LOVE dc, and I think Gtown is a great school but it seems to be overly expensive. does anyone know about the precentage of grant money the school offers first year students? are the finaid packages need based? I would love to go to Gtown, but not if it will cost me 3X the amount of my state school.

How exactly are you going to work on the political side of the health care system as a medical student?

I go to Georgetown for undergrad, and I;m in the School of Nursing and Health Studies. We run into med student alot and sometimes peek into the medschool library for research or steal their profs for guest lectures. My MCAT teacher is a 3rd year too and she's really awesome. Everyone seems to really like it, and my advisors have been pushing me to apply, they say gtown turns out excellent clinicians. As for DC, I LOVE IT. The georgetown campus is unbelievable and the DC area is like no where else. I'm from chicago, and DC is now my second home, I cant wait to get back for the fall semester. The medschool/hospital is on one side of the campus (shares with undergrad) which is pretty cool since its right next to the women's soccer field (do you can jump over and watch the AWESOME women's hoya soccer team play.....)

I graduated from GUSOM in 2007.

(1) Did I enjoy my experience? Yes.

Despite what people read or hear, I can tell you first-hand that the quality of the clinical instruction is top-notch. The faculty are great, and not only at the mother institution. Satellite rotations at WHC, Fairfax, and Arlington are equally valuable. I argue that the VA was the only place where the education quality dropped a bit, but that's likely universal across the country.

(2) Are Georgetown medical students constantly stressed, cut-throat gunners who stab one another while backs are turned? No.

Sure, there will be a small percentage of the class who really attempt to stand out from the rest of group. These are the people who are talking to professors during 1st-year orientation to line up research projects instead of going out for beer - the people who wake up at 3am and round on the entire service instead of just their own patients. But to each his own.

95% of my class were good, hard-working people who bonded well and worked well together. So please dismiss the stereotypes.

(3) Georgetown and GW are both terrific schools and likely similar in reputation, education, and cost. I prefer the Georgetown location more (although it was a mere mile or two east of GW). GW's facilities are nicer, no doubt, but rumor has it that Georgetown may be building a new hospital.

Yes, Georgetown was having financial difficulties, but now that they've been purchased by MedStar, most of that is in the past. I say, "most," as there are still lingering issues.

(4) Would I do it all again? In a heartbeat. The downside was definitely the cost, I can't argue with that. I'm in raging debt, more so than the majority of my residency peers. It's depressing, but it all comes out in the wash.

Georgetown has pleanty of financial assistance, I was given nearly 10K a year grant money (which I don't have to pay back). And it's definitely nice if your family is in the position to contribute.

Good luck folks...
