Go with MSU for sure. I agree with exmike that if you're driven to get a good residency, then you will. The extra 70 grand you'll pay over the four years at Georgetown compared to MSU and still end up with an MD is definitely not worth it. Also, I've heard some pretty questionable things as far as the reputation at Georgetown. In 4 years, with the financial situation against the ropes, Georgetown could very well have a rapidly declining reputation among residency directors. Plus, it seems to me that Georgetown's medical school gleans a bit off of the undergrad and law school. If that's so (and judging from what I've heard, it is), then it may not really have that great of a reputation among residency directors, which is what really matters when it comes to getting a great residency. Just remember, an MD = MD = MD. BUT . . . an MD plus $70,000 in your pocket from a great school like MSU is even better. 😉
 
Sancho, my friend. This is such an easy choice if you think about it logically. Now, I'm a medical student whose been through this whole process of choosing and such. I know that it can be difficult and the uncertainty as to your prospects at obtaining a great residency four years down the road are hard to judge. But, in my opinion, your prospects at obtaining a great residency four years down the road at Georgetown are much more uncertain than at MSU. It is well known in the medical community that Georgetown has had some financial problems. Actually, a friend of mine is at Georgetown and has said that he thinks the financial problems at Georgetown are definitely real and the students subsequently pay the price both educationally and financially. I saw an interesting thread which had the opinion of another medical student to this effect which I thought was interesting Georgetown's Financial Woes Anyway, go to MSU. Hands down the better choice for you. If you want a great residency, then excel in medical school - Do well on the boards and get great evaluations/recommendations from your clinical rotations. Also, don't pay the extra money because it is really going to add up. By the time you pay off $70,000, it could turn into shelling out $200,000 or so. Georgetown is not worth that kind of money even if it were the better school. Go to MSU. Hope my opinion has helped. 🙂
 
Go with MSU. Def. not Georgetown. MSU is a great school and Georgetown is definitely not worth the money you'll shell out. I totally agree with the above statements. I think you'll get a great residency no matter where you go just as long as you do very well in medical school. Georgetown's rep has suffered and that doesn't seem to be changing. I sure wouldn't pay $400,000, which is about what Georgetown would cost you by the time you paid off your loans, to go to a school where you don't know what kind of rep it will have at the end of those four years. MSU is not only a safe bet, it's a great school. Good luck!!! 👍 👍

I looked at some of your other threads and it looks like you're interested in radiology. I would definitely go to MSU if you are interested in radiology. MSU does very well in the match in that specialty. I have a friend who goes to MSU whose wanting to go into radiology and he's very happy with his training there. Don't go to Georgetown. You'll be wasting your money when you could receive just as good, if not better (since Georgetown's reputation is declining), a match from MSU. Also, I know MSU has some pretty high-profile faculty members in the department of radiology. There's this one doctor, Dr. James Potchen (I think that's his name), whose very well known in the field of radiology. Having doctors like Dr. Potchen give you recommendations when applying for residencies would definitely help you match very well. Go to MSU - It is clearly the better choice.

I find it odd that most people bashing Georgetown have only 1 post to their name (HMS'05, NSUCOM'06, MD'06 just to name a few). Don't their names have a similar pattern? 🙄

Again, stop bashing a school if you know nothing about it and your "facts" are only based on hearsay from this forum.

Beambright FYI: HMS'05 and NUSOM'06 both joined July 2004. MD'06 joined late June 2004. Yeah right, how likely is it that all these posters have only 1 post and they're all giving bad "opinions" of only Georgetown. Give me a freaking break. We're premeds/meds so we're not dumb you know. 🙄

I did get off the Georgetown waitlist and chose not to go there for exactly the reasons I gave. Actually, I'm going to Vandy, which is a helluva lot better school than Georgetown. Hey SDNer2004 - What's the date on my post? Oh yeah, that's right . . . May 19, 2004. Almost 2 months ago. 🙄 🙄 🙄 Maybe you do have an inferiority complex since you feel a need to defend Georgetown to anyone who criticizes it.

Why am I being accused? SDNer2004, what did I do to you? I really resent the fact that just because my username might sound like someone else's that you automatically consider my opinions to be illegitimate. Talk about "hearsay." I just joined SDN because I heard about it from a friend at NSUCOM and wanted to get some opinions on residencies. But, apparently, there's some sort of pecking order based upon the number of posts you have.

Is this really what Sancho was asking? All you had to do was give your opinion. Unbelievable. I hope your diagnosis of patients is based upon more facts than the speculation you provide here.

Also, I'm reporting you for trolling.

So all the fake posters have been banned. This goes to show that we really have to take opinions on SDN with a grain of salt. There will be posters/students out there who will do anything to sabotage others just to get an acceptance...even bring down the name of a school. 🙄 I just can't believe how conniving they can be. All I have to say is, "Wow". Even the last person (SFW) who I thought was legit also turned out to be the same person.

As a side note to be fair, MSU has its own money problems (a large part of why the school is moving to Grand Rapids.)
Although its long term future is probably solid- because in G.R., they'll be bankrolled by the deep, deep pockets of those wiley multibillionaires, DeVos and Van Andel.

And I highly doubt Georgetown is going to just go down like KMart.
 
I am currently living in DC, and it's a great city. I've also lived in East Lansing and it's not so fun. So, if you're looking at more than just the med school (location, etc) - I would pick Georgetown. Good luck

Just for full disclosure, I interviewed and was accepted at MSU. I withdrew from GU following some early acceptances in October. I do believe I have a good insight into both schools. I find it offensive that SDN2004 assumes anyone giving advice contrary to his/hers is considered a multiple account holder or hell, an "ingrate". Given that I have no incentive with regards to GU, why would I mislead a fellow classmate? I truly enjoyed my MSU experience. However, I was accepted from out of state so the cost was prohibitive. I've maintained on my mdapplicants page since the day I was accepted (oct 15, last year) that it is a school I would seriously consider if I was a michigan resident.

I personally do not find GU a very appealing school for various reasons, ones im sure Sanchos is also aware of. SDN2004, you need to learn to accept that not everyone will agree that your favorite school is the best choice in any given situation. I am among the group of people that believe that very few private schools are worth the money if you have a decent in state option as Sanchos has. I had a great academic experience as a physio, but there are many schools I would go to over GU, public and private. That is just my personal opinion and the OP can take it however he wants. If he got in GU from the physio program then he obviously has the academic prowress to excel anywhere and obtain his choice of residency. In such a situation, what is the point of wasting a new BMW 7 series or a house down payments worth in tuition?

Couldn't you see that they all got banned? Also, I wasn't grouping you with them so don't get too defensive. They were deliberately bringing down G'town just so they can get in themselves. You are different because you don't want to go to G'town. However, most users on here know perfectly well your opinion of G'town, as evidenced by your prior posts. Yes, everyone has opinions and they are perfectly entitled to theirs, but do you have to make it perfectly clear how much you hate/dislike G'town?

I'm not trying to defend G'town without reason. Just trying to be fair because a lot of posters are telling unknowing SDNers false information that should at least be clarified.

Sancho, I'd save my money. MSU is a good school. I live pretty close to it, actually, and it's very well respected in community and all. I think I'll probably apply to Georgetown this year just because it's a school I think I might have a shot at. But - If I got into both MSU and Georgetown, I'd go to MSU. Save your money. Not worth paying $70,000 xtra or however much it would be just to end up with an MD. Both are good schools, but money is an issue for me and when it's that much money I'm guessing it's probably an issue for most people.

Kick your med school classes and you're guaranteed a great residency coming from MSU!!!

Not to sound argumentative or anything, but if Georgetown's finances don't pick up as the vice president in that "troll's" (MD'06) post said, could that lead to tuition hikes? Or, reduced financial aid? 😕
I'll have to look into this more as the year progresses . . . assuming I get an interview.

plus, i have taken a class with 7 or so of the med school professors from msu and love every one of them (well almost every one). they really know their stuff and are very willing to do whatever it takes to make sure you understand everything as well.

Sancho, wouldn't your first year at G'town be a piece of cake since you can waive all the classes you took this year? This means you'll have more time to concentrate on research and/or other activities. That's something else to think about.

Anyway, it's basically up to you to decide. Ask people you know personally, not people on an internet messageboard who want your acceptance. Good luck! 🙂
 
I am going to Georgetown this coming year. As far as I know, it's in business and decent shape. Yes, Gtown is expensive but that seems to be the case at most medical schools, even my state schools. Yes, Gtown does not have the best parking/transportation situation.

With this med school stuff, your decision should come down to where you think you'll do the best and be happiest. For me, Gtown was convenient, not too far from home, near family and friends, it is a good school and I will learn a lot. For me, I could care less where I went to school because I don't think the school determines whether you will be a nice or mean or competent doctor. A lot of it depends on you and what you want out of your studies and your career.

So go wherever you want and end it. We need to put these silly Gtown threads to rest.

I got into MSU (it was my first acceptance) and although I never really considered it (due to location and price), it seemed like a well run school with a very caring faculty. If I was from the area, I would definitely have considered it. I have heard nothing good about Georgetown (and stuff about it being run-down). Nonetheless, Michigan is pretty boring, especially East Lansing. If you can deal with that, I think its a nice school. You'll definitely receive good training there. Good luck.

Aren't you going to UCI? I heard you guys have to sit in traffic for an hour just to get to your medical center from campus. Get my point? There's always something that someone on here is going to pick at about your school.

I wholeheartedly agree with Cather. Pick somewhere that you'll be happy, not because someone did or didn't hear something about a school.
 
I have friends who did their post bac program there...and were not too high on the school...they ended up in NY schools. I'm not picking on your school, I am just stating what I heard. I could care less about Gtown, or any school outside of Cali for that matter.
 
I think all physios should be banned from posting about Gtown Med. You don't "know" Gtown. You know what its like to go to a school that you haven't been accepted to yet...and that must be really hard. But stop posting all this nonsense about Gtown just cause you didn't get in.

Gtown is a great school. I'd go to Gtown in a second over MSU...no way I'd live in East Lansing for 4 years. Go Hoyas

Believe it or not, there are physios that turn down GU for other schools, or ones that dont apply at all (like me). Given that they take 2/3 of the med classes in the exact same classroom, i dont see how you can say they dont "know" gtown. Certainly they know it better than someone that only visited it there on interview day.

I do think that rejected physios/waitlisted phsyios to GU are poor sources for "recommendations" because they may have a vested interest in recommending against GU.
