Hey guys! I got offered a seat into the OTD program!! I didn't realize what an amazing ranked school Brenau really is. I got waitlisted in the masters program but accepted in the OTD program starting in August. Do you guys know since most programs are transitioning into a OTD program how like good the job market is for OTDs vs clinicians that only have a masters? If so I would love to know! Secondly, i also noticed how we don't have much fieldwork experience as the master students have and I was wondering why that is. If anybody could explain that to me that would be great! Im really wanting to work with patients once Im out of school so thats why I want to make sure that this program is a good fit for me once im out! Thank you all once again!

Congrats to you, that’s great! Sorry I can’t really answer your questions, but were you waitlisted in the OTD program, or were you accepted without being waitlisted?

I was accepted without being waitlisted. Like this is what she messaged me saying.
"As you may know, we received over 200 applications for the 32 seats in our Master of Science in Occupational Therapy Program on the Gainesville campus. Unfortunately, this resulted in the wait listing of many highly qualified applicants such as you.
In August 2020, the first cohort of the entry-level occupational therapy doctoral students began classes on the Norcross Campus. Based on your academic achievements, health-related experiences, and background, I would like to offer you a seat in the second cohort. However, you will need an additional prerequisite course--ethics or philosophy. Our Admissions Coordinator can assist you with locating a course.
The OTD program also begins August 2021 and is 9 semesters totalling 110 credits while the MSOT program is 7 semesters totalling 94 credits. The OTD includes a focus on global health as well as additional coursework in entrepreneurship, advocacy, program development, and education. It also includes an additional practice experience. I attached a copy of the curriculum sequence--the OTD is the column on the right. You can find estimated tuition here. For information on the differences between a master's and doctorate degrees in occupational therapy, click here.
I hope you will accept this offer. Please reply to me with any questions or concerns as well as your decision!".
If I am correct I was accepted right? Im just making sure the semantics aren't messing with me.

Yeah you were def accepted! Congrats girl! Will you be attending?

I most def will be! I just want my questions answered though! Do you know what hospitals and sites brenau is associated with? Do they have good clinical affiliations? You know what the crazy part to this whole thing is. I got accepted into a PT school as well but its not a very good school and has horrible reviews so Im really happy that I was accepted here and that I get to be a part of this journey and start in August. Otherwise with the PT school I got accepted at I start in May of this yea and I was expected to move there by the end of the month. That's just way too stressful.

does the OTD at brenau have a white coat ceremony out of curiosity?

That's awesome! I declined my seat just because I got accepted somewhere else but it was a tough decision. I declined because when I would ask pretty basic questions about the program, they could not give me a straight answer. I asked about fieldwork placements and the general schedule of the day. It seemed really jam-packed (M-F, 8-5), and that kind of put me off. That is just my perspective though- I do not think you would be making a 'bad' choice in choosing to attend Brenau. Best of luck!! 🙂

Where did you happen to accept if you don't mind me asking? And what did they tell you about the field work placements?

From what I know and have learned from other OT’s, have a MSOT vs an OTD does not necessarily matter when applying to jobs. It’s usually based on working experience.

the OTD and the MSOT should prepare you to be an entry-level general OT clinician! No need to worry there.

Brenau is has tons of placements in GA and other states due to them being around for 20 years. What I have learned from other OTs in the field in the area is that Brenau has a really good reputation for their FW students. I know Brenau has connections with most hospital systems in GA but the primary one is Northeast GA Medical Center. They have a wide variety of placements though all around in different settings 🙂 (i’m a second year student in my level 2 feldwork)

Thank you so much for giving me that information! Can I PM you for more questions?

I would definitely recommend a good planner, laptop, and tennis shoes! You should only need 1 pair of scrubs at this point (and it’s only at your discretion, you will be given a polo shirt that you can opt to wear). You’ll need a pair of comfortable business casual pants (black or khaki). For classes there is no dress code so wear whatever is comfortable 🙂 i would also recommend a printer! Also yes you can PM me with more questions!

I am finding it hard to PM you its not giving me the option to do so. Does Brenau have a white coat ceremony for their OT students like most schools do? I never saw anything about that so I was just curious as to we get inaugurated in per say?

I just got off the Brenau MSOT waitlist, but I was accepted into a OTD program closer to home, so I'll be declining. Just wanted to let folks know, the waitlist is still moving. 🙂
