I couldn't find anything already posted on this so I wanted to ask the DO clan because I know most DO's would probably think or know, or want to know more about this than the MD wannabe's 😉

What are your thoughts on the Gerson Therapy? I know most MD's are MUCH MUCH more "science" and "medicine" (push those pills!!!) based than the ideal image of your DO. But I'm just curious what people think of things such as immunotherapy, using nutrition as a means to fight sickness, etc.

I know many people think that the Gerson Therapy is a bunch of mumbo jumbo, and that's fine because we all have our opinions, but I'd just like to know what yall all think. And if anyone here knows people who have done it or heard stories, please share!

Thanks.

I think it is all mumbo jumbo.

Really. Don't get me wrong though. I think nutrition is very important and I do think there are carcinogens in the food we eat. I think less meat is essential for health. I do think some of these hormones and growth products within our food, in addition to additives and preservatives can cause cancer. I think maintaining a healthy nutrition plan can assist in immune system response.

I do not however think nutrition can be used in place of modern medicine in a case like cancer. The human body is amazing in every way, and nutrition can help with many problems. But like MDs, the science needs to back it up for me to be a believer.

And we need to reduce our reliance on prescriptions. This goes for MDs and DOs.

DOs can write all the prescriptions MDs can, and if Up To Date says the studies support X treatment for best results, both DOs and MDs will do it. The naturopathy route is not really a DO "thing".

The concept behind Gerson Therapy is right on. Things like proper diet and management of stress are essential in maintaining a proper immune system and overall health. Can one's immune system be weakened with a poor diet and lifestyle? Absolutely. Toxins build up in the body all the time... so eating clean foods and drinking lots of water is important for health. And logically speaking, insufficient nutrients would of course prevent the body from operating at its maximum capacity.

Yet as amazing as the human body's amazing ability to heal and cleanse itself is, sometimes this isn't enough. Modern medicine is a beautiful thing.

I read this article yesterday with these parents talking about how we shouldn't vaccinate our kids... claiming that proper diet and health can strengthen our immune systems to overcome diseases like polio, small pox, and the flu. Ironically, all of these parents were vaccinated. Big talk from *****s who never have to worry about getting these diseases to begin with. I feel bad for their kids.
