I started out this semester rough and I'm going to receive a C or lower in Neurobiology (300 level class) unless I withdraw now. I'm interested in applying to dental school possibly next fall. I have a 4.0 unweighted in my high school GPA and a 3.909 from 59 credits at CC (I skipped two years of college, these credits were gathered during hs). This is technically my first college semester at a reputable state school although I'm starting as a 3rd year. I already have 1 W and I'm doing 13 credits this semester, dropping this will bring me to 10 credits (under minimum of 12) and two W's my first semester.

On the other hand keeping this will completely destroy my GPA and this is just a biology elective (re: not necessary for major).

What's worse? A W or a bad grade/botched GPA(science gpa too)?

Please please advise.

i really dont know.... ican tell you one thing that alot of W's are going to throw up red flags. Are you really going to get a C or lower... the semester is still young, there is no chance that you can redeem yourself?.... maybe get a b-?

Oh no I can't, I meant to mention, there are only 3 midterms in the class that are all equally averaged to get the final grade, each one at 33.33% and I received a 47.5 on the first midterm, so no, even if I got 90s on the next two, I'd come out with a 76 (which I believe is a D? or low C)

I'm thinking I could make up for it next semester though by taking more credits than avg? This was my first semester after all and I really had no idea what I was doing.

You could retake the class when it is offered again. At least getting an A in the course the second time will show that you are and were capable of performing in the course. As long as you don't fail it, stay in. You will learn some useful information.

I'm probably biased since I will end up with at least 2 Ws, but I think it's better to withdraw than to get a bad grade. However, keep going as long as possible so you learn the material as much as possible and make sure you really focus on it the second time around.

i.e. I withdrew from ochem1 cause I failed the first two tests. Got an A the second time around.

no scale? ask the prof. what you can do seeing as you want to get above a C. maybe you can do some extra extra-cedit or some sort. otherwise, i'd take a W over a C any day.
