I need to find a job for the 9-10 months before I start medical school and was wondering about getting a tutoring position. I've looked into some online tutor sites but it seems there are serious problems with going that route. I've also looked into working for the tutoring center at my local public university, but you have to be registered for a certain number of units at a time to be eligible for that. I've been out of college for a long, long time, and am wondering about ideas for advertising my services in a way that is safe (won't attract crazy stalkers). Should I just stick signs up on campus with an anonymous email address? Any other ideas? And how hard would it be to prepare myself to teach SAT or ACT to high school kids? I am an excellent standardized test taker but the SAT was so different 1000 years ago when I took it.

People at my public university post signs around campus, and hand out their business cards in classes that they're targeting (i.e. stand outside the ochem lectures if that's what you want to tutor). Some even make a speech before class starts. If it's a public university, you are legally allowed to enter the rooms and place your cards on the desk during passing period. A word of wisdom though: make friends with the professors, and respect them. Don't spam too much, and don't do anything disrespectful. We have private tutors on both ends of the spectrum, and let me tell you, you do NOT want to get a bad reputation around campus.

As far as the SAT goes: I know someone who tutors it professionally, and they taught themselves. Granted, this was after years of private tutoring experience. The test was just changed this year, so IMO it's a good time to jump on it since even the more experienced tutors are having to start over to some degree. Just my $0.02. Best of luck.

EDIT: What about MCAT tutoring? If you rocked that thing, that's also an option.

How much do folks charge for this stuff? Maybe I can teach myself SAT by getting a prep book. I did "rock" the MCAT but local test prep companies don't seem to have any openings right now. I'm in a smaller city so they don't offer so many live and in-person classes. Thanks for the tip on hanging out near lecture!

Tutoring can be a very high hourly wage. Parents who want their child tutored are often the ones who are willing to spend big $$$

I think it depends where you live and/or how many wealthy parents are around. For SAT tutoring, I've heard $35 an hour from an experienced tutor. I imagine you could charge much more for that for the MCAT, but I've never talked to someone personally. Check out the professional companies rates.

Tutoring for yourself (not with a school or a company) will be significantly harder, but also pay much more; I wouldn't sweat there being no companies to work for.

As per SDN advice, I'm currently pursuing tutoring to make some money on the side and I was wondering if anyone had experience with the site tutorbeacon.com. Does anyone know if this is a reputable site? The information I've found is very limited. Thank you all in advance for your help!

I had a Lizzy M of 77 but I am a very nontraditional nontrad and had a lot of issues to overcome. I don't want to say exactly where but I was very happy with it--my state school, which is solidly mid-tier, and another lower tier school OOS. Those were both 10/15 and I knew I wanted to stay put so I withdrew pretty much everywhere else at that time (except for one top tier, which interview I attended and then got promptly rejected, LOL).

Go to volunteermatch. I know it's volunteer work, but it is a valuable experience to help inner city kids with mentoring and homework help after school.

i thought you got banned
I didn't get banned, I left for a while. The people on here were stressing me out, but I've found my niche in the black premed section. They know my struggle. I just recently left my shell to come and reply to other threads. I hope you aren't the one I was arguing with because I'm still not over it lol.

I don't know you, but what struggle? I've been reading that thread and don't get what you mean?

If you read my original posts you'll understand. Everyone thought I was trolling but I seriously have/had some chemical imbalances. And its strange because every thread I've started was always around my time of the month. Basically I was talking about how I was in poverty and how I couldn't afford school. So I had doubts in becoming a doctor.

He screwed up and has massive cognitive dissonance.

And I get depressed around the time of my month for at least a week straight. I can't help my chemical imbalances. I've been taking the natural approach by putting lavender scents in my humidifier.

I have read them, I have been stalking SDN a lot longer than I have had an account. I guess I'm just not making the connection between your threads and the black premeds thread.

The people of SDN are full of privilege, they judged me. I'm going to a thread with my like kind because they understand me more. Even though I am a black/white female, I grew up as a black female.

Holy **** dude you're hella racist
I'm not even white (Indian) but I shouldn't have to state that to give my opinions any more weight

Lol how is that racist? I am laughing so hard. Dude, black people understand how black people grew up because we are black lol. I hate things to be about color but that's just how it is. Feel free to PM with any comments or concerns lol.

:yeahright: I'm sure a lot of black people on that thread of "privilege". No one judged you for being poor. No one.

I'm sure if you brought up your problems (not going to interview, etc) they would give you the same advice the rest of SDN did.

They judged me about my mental state when it related to my finances. Don't speak on what you don't know.

No they didn't.. But I'll stop arguing, it's leading no where. I wish you all the luck in your journey and find some volunteering/ECs (most people on that thread are involved since I saw you asked them).

Were you there mr or mrs. incognito? I now what I read with my two eyeballs. They judged my mental state pertaining to my finances. And it was a lot of people who just jumped into my post without any knowledge of myself. The black premeds are the only ones that get me, that's why I skeptical of coming out of incognito because of posts like these. Thank you for your concerns and the luck that you wished me. I wish you well in your journey to becoming a doctor or something.

Wtf. That's what you think because you're not talking about your finances on that thread.

Wait what thread are you on? If you're on my first ever thread about me ranting then I apologize. But my second rant was about finances and depression and my doubts of becoming a doctor.

No, sorry. I only read the ones when you were denied aid and how you didn't go to an interview.

Ok, sorry. Big misunderstanding. But yeah that second rant thread was closed out cause I said I'm so done with SDN please close this thread.

I think I read that one too. Idk dreamadream, it's time to put on your big girl panties. Have you ever worked a day in your life? You speak about privilege, but my parents have money and I worked since I was 14 (though, illegally haha).

Heavens *face palm*
I worked a summer job and left it for school
I took 15 credits last semester
I've been in poverty all my life
My mom is a single parent with epilepsy
My mother has two other children
I plan on volunteering, working full time?(I have two interviews next week), and going to school full time, then transferring for Fall 2016

I like how you answered my question then proceeded to spew out excuses (which I have read on all your threads before). You said your mom can function without your help/your brothers can help. I know you're in poverty, which is why I find it so interesting you're 18-19 and have never worked to help your mom (or even just yourself) before.

Wooooosaaaaaaa
Firstly, I would like to say that I have had a job in the summer after hundreds of applications I've submitted. I have a book of all of the jobs I applied to and the date I submitted the application so please lets no go there.
My mother is on welfare duhhhh, she has enough money to get herself plus her two other children by, hell, I can even get by
The only thing my mother buys me is food, I don't ask her for anything else.
Again you are being judgemental
I've worked my azz a off as a black female who grew up with no father.
I am shocked that I go to college and want to become a doctor because little black girls from the hood just don't know the array of opportunities there are. I plan on mentoring those children for a couple of months until I transfer.
I am moving on up to bigger and better things. I have 2 job interviews next week, I'm going to school full time, transferring this year, and volunteering. This is exactly why I stay incognito.
Thank you for your concern.

I'll just stop.

I'm just :beat::beat::beat::beat::beat:

I hope those girls from the hood actually take your advice.
