How does this work? Do you apply for a state license first or both at the same time? Anyone done this yet?
 
You'll need your full state license first (not the limited license issued by your training program). You can then apply for your DEA number. Most places you'll also need your state controlled substance number for, of course a separate fee.
 
As noted above, you'll need a full license which requires passage of Step 3 and various lengths of training depending on your state and type of medical education (ie, IMGs are often required to have longer periods of training than US trained residents).
