Getting BA from CSU next year. Want another BA from a UC.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You should probably look into post-bacc programs instead.

Right now with the budget crunch UCs are almost never looking at applicants who already have a bachelor's degree.

yeah, if you can get straight As in a master's program you can strengthen your application and get some of that all important research experience so many are lacking in - probably with a paper or two
it also gives you two more years to pump up your ECs, as well as getting some TAing experience which would likely reflect favorably upon your leadership/teaching abilities

You would be applying to schools as a 2nd bachelors degree seeking student. You need to make sure UCI admits students seeking a second bachelors degree. Most schools do not admit students with prior degrees, but there still are quite a few that do, so just double check with them.

If they do allow it, then most likely you wouldn't need to send them SAT scores, HS transcripts etc. since you already have a degree. All they would use to evaluate you would be your college transcripts. Also, most schools that do offer 2nd bachelors degrees waive all gen ed requirements which is nice.

UCs do accept second bachelors applicants. Every year when the application period starts they release a list of the campuses and which majors are open/closed for freshman, transfer, second bachelors, and limited status applicants. There are conditions for second bachelors applicants. For example, from the the UCI website:
You may be considered for admission to a program for a second degree if your educational objective changed substantially after you received your bachelor's degree. All second baccalaureate admissions are subject to the approval of the dean or director of the UC Irvine school or program in which the second degree will be earned.

Selection Criteria for UC Irvine Second Baccalaureate Candidates
  • Admission as a candidate for a second bachelor's degree requires that the applicant:
    • is fully eligible for admission to the university
    • has strong promise of academic success in the new major
For Fall '10, 14 out of 120 second bachelors applicants were accepted at UCI. Based on conversations with two of them, it seems departments are more open to second bachelors applicants who are applying to majors that are waaaay different from their first degree, like for example one guy I talked to received a business degree from his previous institution, and then he applied to UCI for engineering.

I am currently a second bachelors applicant for Fall '11. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions about the process 🙂

ahh i seee what you mean

UC davis only lets 2nd BAs in agriculture n biotech for example. does UCI have a list like that? thanks for all your help 😀

UCs do not really take second bachelors.
Are you really going to say:
"I went to Davis for a 2nd bac in Agriculture and have absolutely no intention nor interest in the area, only some GPA booster"

Why don't you try to do well on the MCAT and then either apply to MD/DO schools or do a SMP? Probably would be a lot cheaper than doing another Bachelor's degree (which would boost you up to at best a 3.75).

I would strongly consider moving up, not laterally, with your education. While I'm not an adcom, I cringe at the idea of your suggestion. I second the above poster who suggested a post-bacc program. That would allow you focused exposure to med-sci., which should improve your application more than another similar degree.
