You'll be walking around the drug storing area...then say out loud, "When the hell did Tussionex go generic?!?!" or "WTF!?!? Flomax is Generic?!?!"

And then you'll run into some of the stupid, not really new drugs that have no reason for existing that you've never heard of...apparently Tricor has like 80 brand names now for no reason...the hell is that all about...like 50 new birth control brands popped up...apparently the Yaz family of products decided to go generic...the names of the generics are just as stupid...

Dude...a lot of crap happens in a year...seriously...it makes me feel stupid...I'm not used to being this oblivious to things... :/

Yeah, tell me about it! Last night I saw Exforge HCT for the first time as well as Onglyza. Totally blew my mind! I also saw some new insulin pen with a really weird name that I can't recall at the moment. It's amazing what you miss in over a year!

Victoza (liraglutide)?

I had another interview earlier today, and had to dredge up a lot of stuff I hadn't thought about in a while. It's really hard to give a job description almost a year later.

I also told them what happened at my last job, and the pharmacy director had just come from a convention (don't recall which one) and said this is going on all over the place, and is also why so many people are applying for residencies - just so they can get a paycheck SOMEWHERE.

p.s. I then drove 3 hours home in the soon to be legendary Midwestern ice storm. I actually cancelled an appointment with them last week due to weather. This had better be worth it.

When I was on my community IPPE and advanced community APPE I was like, "What IS all this crap!?!" with all the expensive combination BP meds and Oracea and extended release amoxicillin and Nuvigil and Pristiq and all the of other stuff we don't carry at the VA! It was like being in a whole new world of expensive "me too" drugs.

I thought that was a phrase that only people at my school used

It's not insulin. It's a once-daily GLP1 analog, and so happens to be the drug i gotta make a 20-25 minute seminar about.
Right. It's definitely not insulin. When he said "insulin", I thought he meant Apidra.

Allegra will be going OTC the first week of March. Ah, I can imagine it now, "what do you mean it is no longer covered?"
You forgot about generic Aricept and Tribenzor.

I haven't seen Tribenzor yet. I've only dispensed Azor so far.

I'm actually excited about Allegra going OTC. It creates a group of 2nd gen antihistamines that we can recommend. Plus, our state Medicaid will probably pick a manufacturer and finally cover it without a PA.
Tribenzor was hardly dispensed before it went generic! Wow. That was fast.

Tribenzor sounds like this century's Ser-Ap-Es. 😛

also arimidex went generic and ortho tri cyclen lo went brand only.

Tribenzor is not generically available. It is just a new drug, which a lot of MDs write for and is never covered. Tribenzor is a combo drug of olmesartan, amlodipine, and hydrochlorothiazide.

Don't forget about Colcrys!

Now I've done a little research on this but basically did it become brand only because new research came out for the FDA from an old drug that was produced before the FDA originated?

Zonatuss (Benzonatate 150 mgs) )is the best yet. Benzonatate which is fairly cheap and has been around forever is repackaged as a brand name only drug for $200 for 30 capsules. Awesomness!

I forgot about Beyaz. It is a new birth control pill. The only difference between it and all the others is that it has folate in it.

My husband has been making fun of Beyaz. He says that putting folate in a birth control pill to prevent birth defects is basically saying, "This birth control doesn't work!!!"

Wow a blast from my past........

Serpasil.....: Reserpine
Apresoline..: Hydralazine
Esidrex......: HCTZ

The ultimate BP combo drug of the 60's & 70's....

yeah that was my thinking too! Also if you're on birth control, typically that means you are not wanting to have a baby, so you would think that if you did get pregnant you would not be concerned about the baby having birth defects because you don't want a baby. And yes I know obviously not everyone is thinking that way or would be all for getting an abortion but I'm just saying, the mindset of someone who is taking birth control is that they are not wanting to have a baby, yes?

Maybe the folate is to replace what's lost during a menstrual bleed? I haven't looked at the pack yet, so I'm not too sure. Sort of like the iron in Fe birth controls?

This is feasible, however, the company is advertising the additional folate as a preventative for neural tube defects. Doesn't give me much faith in their product.

I'm constantly making fun of the birth control names too... who thinks of these things... probably some marketing person trying to "feminize" the names and make them appealing to women... :scared:

To quote Isaac Watts . . .

Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

I'm pretty sure they're named after patients who performed in the clinical trials. Ocella Washington, Alesse Taylor, Kariva Johnson, Portia Wilson....

I got an order for "Jalyn" a few weeks ago. It sounds more like a trendy baby name than an actual drug.

90 day supply of Tyra? :meanie:

Once the patent expires we can take Shakira + Folate

Because optimally you want to start adding folate to your diet some 6-9 months before you plan to get pregnant, I think that's the reason for adding folate to birth control pills. If a woman is still taking the pills until she is ready to get pregnant, why not get folate in at the same time. As far as I can remember, low folate affects baby's neural tube development during the first month of pregnancy or so, before a lot of women even know they are pregnant.

And names... it's kind of fun how names get developed. Usually done by consultants with the input of the internal team. And it's very hard, because it either sounds like something already out there, or looks like something already out there, or can't be trademarked because it's similar to whatever, or it means something obscene in another language, or a foreign authority doesn't allow for this letter to be used and you want the name to be the same (ideally) everywhere you sell your drug... Can't be suggestive/hinting at efficacy either (not that some aren't). Therefore, I tend to be forgiving of the drug names (both generic and brand), though some names just make me cringe, yes.

If anyone here has heard of Emsam patches, I have met a person from whatever company developed it. He told me it was named by the company's CEO, whose children were named Sam and Emily. Hence, Emsam. 🙄
