Hey, does anyone know any way of getting back the initial deposit in case of withdrawl from a school? I had kept Univ. of Detroit mercy as an option and put in a deposit of 1500 (its a huge amount for me!).....I have now been selected at Tufts and was thinking of a way in which I could get my money back from Detroit.....

there is a clause in the detroit app. that if the school thinks that you have not completed the required courses, they can cancel your admission and in that case the school returns the initial deposit. I still have to take a couple of courses in the summer. What if I don't take these courses ? Is there a chance of getting my money back?

Any suggestions from anyone .......

I'd chalk it up as a loss. It's just not worth that hassle, IMO.

Definitely. If you're spending the next four years at Tufts, that $1500 deposit at UDM will be pocket change alongside what you spend for your degree.

$1500 is $1500. If you can get it back, I say go for it!!! I know I could use an extra $1500 right now.

Just because we're going to be in a lot of debt, doesn't mean we should make unwise decisions about our money. So anyone who says don't worry about the $1500, it's nothing....well then how about you give me $1500! You won't even notice it with your $200,000 in student loans.

as long as you're not doing anything that will cause you to lose sleep at night, try and get your money back. i'm sick of hearing people say the same "drop in the bucket compared to what you'll be making" argument. $1500 is $1500, and it was your $1500 to begin with. get it back... you got into dental school. you deserve it.

Good luck with that. You gave them $1500 to hold your spot and then you want the money back? Sounds like you're breaking your end of the deal.

If you wanted to go there and they told you that they had given away your spot, i'd imagine you'd be pissed. But hey, maybe you can slip one past them.

I guess I am somewhat naive on this front because I think that the deposit at Tufts maybe somewhat higher, but I am not sure. At any rate, there is no way in hell I could afford to pay a deposit that high at anyone's dental school, considering the amount of money needed to apply in the first place, travel for interviews, and then find a place to live in the new area. It makes the $400 I paid seem like Monopoly money.

In the end, I would try to get it back, but don't lose too much sleep. First and foremost, take measures to secure a spot at the school you really want to attend and deal with the $1500 afterwards. I hope it works out for you. Take care and GOD Bless.

Have you looked up the word deposit in the dictionary??? You had to know that when you gave them the money, that if you didn't go they would keep your deposit. The fact that it was $1500 should have told you not to give it to them if the money meant that much to you. They use the deposit to deter people from holding spots indefinatly.
