I am currently a 32 year old police officer with an undergrad degree in Applied Arts and Science. I finished my undergrad degree with a 2.5 gpa in 1992 and failed two science courses in 1988. I started on a second bachelors in Biochemistry a year and a half ago and currently have a 4.0 gpa (taken general chemistry, organic, physics, general biology, trigonometry, biochemistry and some electives. What do I need to do to make myself more attractive to med schools.

Well you're mainly already doing it! Good job on turning your gpa around.

What else you can do? The usual -- clinical exposure, good letters of rec., rock the MCAT, pray to your god, save a starving third world country...kidding...stay on course you're in good shape.

Have you considered applying to DO schools also? DO schools will like your "life experience" more and not be so judgmental of your former GPA. Can't hurt to apply to both and if you hit pre med nirvana and end up with 15 acceptances then you can decide what you want to do. Food for thought.

Don't fret, there is hope! In my class at a notoriousely conservative school, we have a 51 year old, a couple students in their 40's a handfull of thirties, and many in thier late 20's. Incidentally it's an MD school. My advice to you would be to get a job in clinical medicine. In other words something that allows you to do direct Pt care. A few examples are CNA type jobs (nursing aid), in a hospital, or you could work as an EMT. With your police triaing, that might be a more logical job for you. Good luck, and remember: your age and experience are ASSETS, use them to your advantage!
