What a wonderful, euphoric feeling to get an acceptance letter from an O.D. school. All the hard work has seemingly paid off and you are receiving your just reward.
“The process” in itself is up lifting as schools show interest in you and on many occasions affect the psyche of some candidates .The worst schools and red flags are numbed as candidates irrationally move underperforming schools to their “top choice” while in reality its their only choice.
It’s imperative that candidates understand that their past stats tell a story about themselves and many should realize they are at risk of never practicing.
See,the money grab is on.Newer programs see the amount that can generated and frankly are opening up additional seats in a stagnant applicant pool. They love to spout manpower shortage etc etc but in reality they will have to supply seats to a set of students would not have got in otherwise. While we can say that’s all fine and good, the REALITY is some of those candidates will never practice.
So,are ALL new programs bad? Of course not. However, your ability to measure eventual outcomes (NBEO PASSAGE) is guarded to say the least. The new ACOE guidelines for accreditation now includes 80% ultimate pass rate.
Ultimate Pass Rates data is imperative to know and speaks to the culture of learning which includes BOTH great, caring professors AND smart, dedicated study peers to share your journey. There is a direct correlation between entering stats and ultimate pass rate so frankly the lower stats of the newer schools concerns me.
To most who read this, this thread has no application .To the others, move with caution and due diligence and find the best place that can prepare you for boards.
